Lionel Messi and football’s ageless wonders can excel into their 40s | Emma Hayes

Argentina’s captain leads the way for veteran strikers at World Cup. They have different styles, but all have shown their worth I would be shocked if the record for the most goals scored by a player in a World Cup – Just Fontaine’s 13 in 1958 – is not broken this summer. That is how elite the world’s top forwards are. They are all pushing each other to keep scoring more. We are so lucky to be watching them at the same time. I also believe, because of the skill set required to be a world-class, modern-day finisher, we are going to see more and more playing into their 40s, so much so that it may be possible that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could go to another World Cup. ‘Here to write our own chapters’: England not daunted by unique occasion of Mexico game, says Tuchel

‘Impossible’ to adapt to altitude but players coping, says coach Aguirre trying to keep El Tri ‘grounded’ before Azteca match Thomas Tuchel has admitted England are enduring a challenging adaptation in Mexico City but is convinced his team will be ready to “write our own chapters” when they face the World Cup co-hosts at Estadio Azteca. The last-16 match against Mexico in their fabled home ground is the most eagerly anticipated of this summer and its logistics have presented unusual problems. England must adapt to playing 2,240 metres above sea level at a venue where Mexico have not lost since 2013. They landed on Friday evening and found it difficult to hit their stride on Saturday afternoon in their final training session before the tie. Continue reading...

England braced for a Mexican whirlwind as Tuchel strives for calm amid the chaos

After their frantic display against DR Congo, England head coach needs his side to remain composed in the Azteca cauldron It was somehow in keeping with the bedlam that has gripped Mexico since Tuesday night when their team beat Ecuador to set up a World Cup last-16 showdown with England on Sunday. There was talk of an incoming storm , which is forecast to bring the risk of flooding and affect a game talked up as arguably the biggest in Mexico’s history. There was a figurative one, too. The kick-off would have to be brought forward from 6pm local time (1am Monday BST) to midday, Fifa was told on Friday, and there followed an intense amount of back and forth, so many different people and companies to consider. In the end, it was decided that it would have to remain at 6pm. There was a lot of energy expended for no actual change and on everybody hurtled. Continue reading...

Delirium, despair, pride: with the fans on Cape Verde’s World Cup rollercoaster

Rotterdam is home to 25,000 Cape Verdeans and 1,600 of them gathered in a beer garden to watch an unforgettable game against Argentina Rotterdam knows how to script a football fairytale. Six players from the Cape Verde side who have lit up the World Cup were born here, nearly 5,000km from their parents’ islands. Five of them played against Argentina, the defending champions, in a bittersweet 3-2 defeat . After last Saturday’s draw with Saudi Arabia took Cape Verde into the last 32, the streets of Rotterdam were full of honking cars, flags streaming from the windows and people dancing. This is the city the locals call the 10th island of Cape Verde. The diasporas from Curaçao and Morocco have also set their own corners of Rotterdam alight during this tournament. Continue reading...

For all Cape Verde’s heroics, Africa’s World Cup could and perhaps should have been better | Jonathan Wilson

Egypt and Morocco are in the last 16 after shootouts, but the continent’s pyramid appears to be getting broader rather than much higher For Africa, this World Cup feels like one of those classic memes from the early days of social media. Is it a gold and white dress or a black and blue dress? Is it a duck or a rabbit? Has this been a good World Cup for Africa or one that underlines the problems of football on the continent? It probably depends where you’re standing. For years, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) had been arguing that five places were not enough for its 54 members: 9% of African sides were represented at a World Cup, while 50% of South America’s members were. The response to that was South American countries had won the World Cup 10 times, whereas Africa had not had a semi-finalist until Morocco reached the last four in Qatar in 2022. Continue reading...
