Netherlands v Morocco: World Cup 2026 last 32 – live

⚽️ Kick-off time: 7pm local/9pm EDT/2am BST/11am AEST ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Mail Ella Mary Waltz writes in on the back of that Germany v Paraguay shootout: “ All England fans admit it. Germany losing by penalties is the ultimate of Schadenfreud.” The lack of a clinical goalscorer has hampered the Dutch team in recent years, but Brian Brobbey has been the solution at this World Cup. The Sunderland striker didn’t initially project as a starter; Memphis Depay was their leading scorer up top through qualifying, but he was nursing a thigh injury in the run-up to the tournament. Canale and Gill the heroes as Paraguay hand Germany first World Cup shootout defeat

Germany exited the World Cup in Boston not with a whimper or even a cry of pain, just an extended wrestle into the dust at the hands of a thrillingly dogged Paraguay, followed by the most extraordinary of penalty shootouts. Not only did Germany lose their first shootout since the original Panenka one of 1976. They did so in a whirl of errors, shanked kicks and what amounted to a sporting meltdown in the New England gloaming. Paraguay will now progress to play a last-16 tie in Philadelphia, but not before celebrating this result as surely the greatest in their football history. And rightly so, after a performance of wonderful heart and defensive discipline. Continue reading...

How Victor Montagliani rose to the Fifa elite despite past controversies

The Concacaf president has done much to bring the World Cup to North America, and could be the man to succeed Gianni Infantino Donald Trump may have been awarded the Fifa Peace Prize but the president doesn’t yet have a whole day named after him. For now, that type of tribute goes to Victor Montagliani, the Canadian President of Concacaf. “Victor’s story is a Vancouver story,” Mayor Ken Sim told an audience at Vancouver city hall last year announcing that 12 September will officially be known as Victor Montagliani Day in the city. The room was filled with Montagliani’s family, friends, and dignitaries including Fifa General Secretary Mattias Grafström, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Wendy Cocchia, and Anthony von Mandl , a Vancouver billionaire whose businesses include White Claw Hard Seltzer, Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Más+ by Messi. MLS commissioner Don Garber sent his congratulations from across the continent. Continue reading...

Brazil into last 16 as Martinelli strikes in stoppage time to break Japan hearts

Not for the first time in this tournament, there were long periods when Brazil did not impress. And not for the first time in this tournament, they got away with it. It may be inexplicable but the Carlo Ancelotti method that worked at Real Madrid is working again: stay in games and eventually either opponents will make a mistake or brilliant players will do something brilliant. Brazil were 1-0 down at half-time and struggling. Their earliest exit form a World Cup seemed entirely possible. Five players in the Brazil starting lineup were aged over 30, five of the six defensive players – and they looked it. Japan were quicker, slicker, sharper and more imaginative. But the introduction of Endrick and a change of shape and approach at half-time changed everything. Brazil started slinging crosses into the box and Japan wobbled. Casemiro, barely a pedestrian in the first half, headed the equaliser and, deep into stoppage time, Gabriel Martinelli squeezed in the winner. Continue reading...

What hosting the World Cup means for Canadian soccer: ‘The stakes are absolutely massive’

Of the trio of World Cup hosts, only Canada is hosting the tournament for the first time – local soccer officials hope it can be transformative Toronto’s Front Street, which loosely tethers the city’s central station and some of its landmarks to the part of the waterfront that hosts the fan fest and Toronto Stadium to the west, thrummed all week with a pleasant energy. Hours ahead of Croatia-Panama on Tuesday, there were scores of jerseys out for those countries, of course, but plenty for Brazil and Scotland and other sides as well. A Croatian fan scolded a street vendor hawking Blue Jays gear by the Rogers Center, where the baseball team were about to play, for not selling any Croatia merch. “Croatia!” he said gruffly. “Gonna win today!” Continue reading...
