The Guardian FootballNew faces, gulfs in class and flawed drama: how 48 teams changed the World Cup
The first 48-team World Cup had its positives and negatives – do we need to brace for a 64-team future? It was less than 12 months after Gianni Infantino succeeded Sepp Blatter as president that Fifa announced the expansion of the men’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams. The reaction was mixed. Diego Maradona said he was “delighted by Gianni’s initiative” because it allowed each country to dream of reaching the tournament, renewing their passion for football. The Guardian FootballSpain’s metronome: the statistics behind Rodri’s superb World Cup campaign
Midfielder’s supreme passing was too much for Argentina to handle in the final but his work without the ball proved just as crucial Rodri is back to his best after multiple injury problems. The former Ballon d’Or winner has started only 22 games since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in September 2024 but you would have no idea from his performances at the World Cup that he had suffered so badly in the previous two years. The 30-year-old was already leading several statistical categories coming into the final on Sunday. He pushed them higher than perhaps even Luis de la Fuente could have hoped. Continue reading...
