Fifa wants more money for its members but that does not guarantee investment | John Duerden

Asia and Africa are bastions of support for Gianni Infantino but Fifa’s money has not always been well spent in the regions Fifa’s justification for its proposed plans to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors is about giving the 211 member associations more money to develop football. It’s safe to say that in the past, funds have done more developing in some places than in others, with millions either going missing or not being used for their original purpose and Fifa too often shutting the stable door after the horse, laden with cash, has ambled out. The reaction has been swift. Uefa has declared its outrage, Concacaf – the North, Central American and Caribbean governing body – has gone for concern and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is disappointed at the lack of consultation. From the Confederation of African Football (Caf), there is, as yet, no word. Asia and Africa have over the years provided Gianni Infantino with steadfast support. There were murmurs over the Fifa president’s close relationship with Donald Trump during the World Cup, especially during the Folarin Balogun affair, but extra cash may help prevent anything louder coming out of Kuala Lumpur or Cairo. England’s 1966 World Cup heroes were fun, humble and unlike today’s stars

After lifting the trophy 60 years ago, some still supplemented their income by performing in working men’s clubs and as after dinner speakers With each passing World Cup I am reminded of the times I spent in the company of those wonderful “Boys of 66”. What a privilege it was getting to know them in a much simpler era when, unlike today’s mollycoddled stars, household names remained unaffected by money and fame. Where were you on 30 July 1966, the day England won the World Cup? I was at my nan and grandad’s house. They had a minute television which seemed no bigger than a matchbox. Intermittently the picture, which was in black and white, would roll around the screen. It was infuriating. My grandad talked about needing to get the “horizontal hold fixed” (unless you are of a certain age you will need to Google that). I was nine years old. Continue reading...

Experimental Liverpool down Wrexham thanks to Rio Ngumoha’s winner

Substitute’s deflected strike earns 1-0 win in New York Chances few and far between in pre-season friendly Liverpool turned the Empire State Building red when launching a new away kit on Tuesday but neither they nor Wrexham could illuminate Yankee Stadium 24 hours later. It was rough in the diamond, although Rio Ngumoha’s deflected goal made it two wins out of two for Andoni Iraola on his first pre-season tour as Liverpool head coach. Ngumoha, a second half substitute who Iraola deployed on the right, satisfied the majority of a 42,204 crowd with a 75th-minute shot that looped in off Wrexham defender Lewis Brunt. Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney (now simply Rob Mac) were in attendance for what the former had labelled a “punch-me moment” but in truth few blows were traded at the iconic baseball stadium.
