Look beyond the flashpoints and flare-ups and perhaps this is the greatest and most romantic of footballing rivalries It’s about the ball, right up until the moment it isn’t. On Sunday afternoon Godoy Cruz played Defensores de Belgrano in Nacional B, the second division of Argentinian football, and among the sea of blue home banners were two crosses of St George, apparently expropriated from England fans at the 2014 World Cup. One reads: “Boys & Girls From Oakwell Barnsley.” The other: “Big Al – Y-Bird – South Croydon – CPFC.” Now I want you to reflect on the levels of pure and gorgeous malevolence – pettiness doesn’t quite cover it, nor does spite – required to travel to Brazil, obtain an English flag, fold it away, bring it home in your luggage, keep it in pristine condition for 12 years , only to unveil it in your second-tier football stadium in the week Argentina play England in a World Cup semi-final. England and Norway fans have flocked to Miami in their tens of thousands to enjoy the football and sunshine It is not just another morning on Ocean Drive, where brashness mingles with brilliance and grandeur sits unashamedly alongside the grotesque. A Huddersfield Town flag is being hung from one of the art deco hotels that make this area of Miami Beach a living, decadent museum. Two Norwegians in national team shirts cycle past, the woman adjusting a viking helmet before pedalling to catch up. To locals playing volleyball beneath the sand dunes as usual, the sideshow is at once inescapable and remote. Not even Miami will have seen a party of this nature. Around 30,000 England fans are due to converge here by Saturday but they will be given a run for their money by those baying for Norway, who have offered some of this World Cup’s enduring spectacles. On the row below, clapping and half-hiding the three-year-old, was a woman in sunglasses, prompting a Spanish TV commentator to post: “The blonde in front has denied us the best sticker of all time.” To which the striker Borja Iglesias replied: “ The blonde in front has given you two goals today , my friend.” Turns out the blonde woman is Oyarzabal’s mum: her name is Dorleta and it was her son who had just scored his second goal of the game and his fourth of the tournament.
