Lionel Messi and football’s ageless wonders can excel into their 40s | Emma Hayes

Argentina’s captain leads the way for veteran strikers at World Cup. They have different styles, but all have shown their worth I would be shocked if the record for the most goals scored by a player in a World Cup – Just Fontaine’s 13 in 1958 – is not broken this summer. That is how elite the world’s top forwards are. They are all pushing each other to keep scoring more. We are so lucky to be watching them at the same time. I also believe, because of the skill set required to be a world-class, modern-day finisher, we are going to see more and more playing into their 40s, so much so that it may be possible that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could go to another World Cup. England braced for a Mexican whirlwind as Tuchel strives for calm amid the chaos

After their frantic display against DR Congo, England head coach needs his side to remain composed in the Azteca cauldron It was somehow in keeping with the bedlam that has gripped Mexico since Tuesday night when their team beat Ecuador to set up a World Cup last-16 showdown with England on Sunday. There was talk of an incoming storm , which is forecast to bring the risk of flooding and affect a game talked up as arguably the biggest in Mexico’s history. There was a figurative one, too. The kick-off would have to be brought forward from 6pm local time (1am Monday BST) to midday, Fifa was told on Friday, and there followed an intense amount of back and forth, so many different people and companies to consider. In the end, it was decided that it would have to remain at 6pm. There was a lot of energy expended for no actual change and on everybody hurtled. Continue reading...

World Cup 2026 power rankings: undisputed No 1, co-hosts surge and giants fall

We assess the standing of the nations who played in the tournament’s last 32 before the next round of games begins Les Bleus look unstoppable – all six of our judges ranked them No 1. Sweden did their best to cope with the French front four but were blown away by the slickest operation in town. Even when an opponent is feeling comfortable, Michael Olise or Kylian Mbappé can produce genius without notice, ripping apart the best-organised defences. “I did say that I wanted to enjoy this World Cup to the fullest,” Mbappé told reporters after the Sweden game. It is hard to imagine the fun stopping any time soon. Continue reading...

Facing Mexico at the Azteca? Suddenly our expectations of England are unusually realistic | Max Rushden

Thomas Tuchel’s side have problems aside from the altitude: defeat in a Mexican haze would be no embarrassment It’s a warm June afternoon in 2009. The teams look uneven. At 30, I am the second-oldest player in our lineup. Lloyd, Nathan and Ben are early 20s – they can all play. Micky the German isn’t in top condition, and at 34 is past his peak. But at a conservative estimate every member of the opposition has two more decades in their legs. A couple of them might be pushing 70. We’re in kit. They are in jeans. We have trainers. They’re in boots – working boots, not “cleats”. And yet after an hour we have been beaten to a pulp. The final score evades my memory, but it might be the only six-a-side I’ve ever played in where “next goal wins” wasn’t a vaguely justifiable way to end things. How had this team of old men beaten us? A word you may have heard more often than usual in the last three days: altitude . In a village somewhere near Lake Titicaca, just shy of 4,000m above sea level, a motley selection of Bolivian farmers had toyed with us. As someone who lets the ball do the work, even a five-yard burst left me breathless. It was not a neutral venue. Continue reading...

World Cup Q&A: England reporter Jacob Steinberg answers your questions – live

Jacob was in Atlanta last night to witness England’s Harry Kane-led comeback against DR Congo. He is online now answering all your questions about the Three Lions’ chances against Mexico, England’s defensive frailties and anything else you’d like to know Sign in or sign up to post your question in the comments nwake3 asks: How do you think Mexico will approach Sunday’s game? Low-block or all-out? Will they play to win? Jacob says: Unlike Thomas Tuchel I was awake for the Mexico v Ecuador game and expect Mexico to be all out again. I think Madueke was staying high and with Masuaku, the DRC left-back. My reading of the goal is Sadiki confuses the defence by running from midfield. Konsa should take him, he doesn’t, Spence gets dragged over and that creates the overload. It wasn’t really that complicated. If Konsa takes Sadiki then Spence can stay with Cipenga. I think. ⚽ All the latest news from day 22 of the tournament ⚽ Bracketology | Knockout stage draw | And email us And I appreciate all this has been forgotten because England won but Harry Kane should have been awarded a first-half penalty. When a goalkeeper slides and does not get the ball, of course the forward is going to take the contact. Kane is just being punished for being as clever as the officials desire. Maurico Pochettino was rather unhappy with Folarin Balogun’s dismissal. The striker painfully caught the Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic on the ankle but it was a complete accident with two players going for the ball. Continue reading...
