After all, why do a random draw when you can build a matrix with 495 possible scenarios in order to assign the fixtures for the eight best third-placers? Anyway, what matters is that Mauricio Pochettino’s team will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, and no new format is going to stop us from – in time-honored fashion – speculating wildly about what may happen next while we still have the chance, with the potential for American wins rated using one of the mantra-loving manager’s motivational rallying cries of choice. Transfermarkt’s combined estimated market value of the two squads is higher than for any of the other 71 matches in this phase of the tournament. Yet the vast majority of the attention at Boston Stadium will be focused on just two men: Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, who are already in the leading pack to win the World Cup Golden Boot for top goalscorers, both scoring twice in each of their first two games. They are very different types of forward. The Norwegian is the ultimate penalty area player, capable of finding space in the most dangerous spots where none appears to exist. His French counterpart is far more comfortable dribbling from wide areas, completing as many take-ons in two games as the Manchester City man does all season. And yes, OK: everyone knows how this game works and why everyone plays it. On one hand, perhaps the greatest sporting day in the history of the world’s 15th most populous country. On the other, 41-year-old man does not score. It’s no contest, really. Get those sweet keywords front and left. Harvest that delicious search traffic. Perhaps you even noticed how I just did exactly the same thing. What not everyone remembers – although Kane certainly does – is how he completed the hat-trick. It was with one of the luckiest goals of his career. The England captain knew nothing about it because he was facing away from the ball. He merely felt Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s shot from outside the area flick off his heel and loop over the wrong-footed goalkeeper. Thomas Tuchel experiences an England tradition – a difficult second game at a major tournament There were times when this looked like the goalless draw with the USA at the 2022 World Cup, or the misshapen stalemate with Denmark in Frankfurt two years ago. For Thomas Tuchel, the worry was that the more passive patterns from the Gareth Southgate era had not quite been driven out of this team yet. The German was watching an England tradition, the difficult second tournament game, and as the hour approached it was possible to see Tuchel becoming increasingly agitated on the touchline. England were predictable and turgid for long spells against a determined Ghana side who earned their point with an exhibition of purest Queiroz-ball. There was no caustic half-time interview from Anthony Barry, no stunning second-half surge. Instead, after the freewheeling attacking play that saw off Croatia last week, this felt familiar. This felt anxious. In the cramped football and sideways passing, this felt more England. They created nothing until a late flurry of chances, and when it was over it was tempting to wonder if the reaction from the crowd would have been more negative if it had been Southgate rather than Tuchel standing in the technical area at Boston Stadium.
