Fans of all stripes pack the bars to sing, cheer and commiserate in city where more than 3m people were born outside US Almost 200,000 Ecuadorians and Ecuadorian Americans live in New York City, and last week quite a lot of them were in a Brooklyn restaurant called El Encebollado de Victor to watch their football team take on Germany – a traditional World Cup powerhouse. It made for quite a sight: a sea of yellow shirts under the restaurant’s blue roof, which had been adorned with red, blue and yellow balloons for the occasion. Among the most patriotically dressed was Luis Aguilar, 45, who was born in the US to parents who had emigrated from Ecuador. Continue reading...

Mexico end World Cup knockout drought with last-32 win over Ecuador in Azteca cauldron

They were held up by an electric storm but, after the skies had cleared, Mexico kept the lightning bolts coming. This was a climactic night that utterly engulfed the senses and its ramifications will be far reaching. El Tri have broken a hex that had nagged and gnawed at the nation’s football psyche across four decades, winning a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1986, and the head turner will be the manner in which it happened. Javier Aguirre’s players cut Ecuador apart in a stunning first-half performance and, on this evidence, woe betide whoever runs into them next. Continue reading...

How USMNT prepare for World Cup penalty drama: confidence, composure and consultants

The US have used outside companies, including one measuring players’ brainwaves, to help them determine who will shoot in a shootout Who would the US need to beat to win the World Cup? There is perhaps nothing more polarizing in the game of football than a penalty shootout. But however you feel about them, you can’t deny the drama involved, which was on full display in Monday’s last-32 matches. Germany were the first at this World Cup to fall victim to the cruel nature of the procedure, with Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah all missing from the spot and handing a shock victory to Paraguay. The Netherlands, who have plenty of familiarity with the devastation of losing in a shootout, came next, putting in a poor effort against Morocco, who took full advantage. Continue reading...

Belgium’s leaders backed to disprove ‘has-beens’ tag in Senegal challenge

Rudi Garcia railed against criticism of his side, who face Senegal in the last 32 with a spring in their step after the 5-1 hammering of New Zealand Belgium had just beaten New Zealand 5-1 to secure top spot in Group G and, at least in theory, an easier last-32 draw, but Rudi Garcia was evidently irked. In response to the first question in a curt post-match press conference, he adjusted the microphone to ensure his point was heard. “I really didn’t appreciate them being called has -beens ,” he said, alluding to an article in La Libre, a French-language Belgian newspaper, that compared Kevin De Bruyne to a washed-up Hollywood actor after a flat display against Iran in their previous match in Los Angeles. England and Tuchel prepare to go deep but know ignominy may lie in wait if they fail | Jacob Steinberg

The shadow of Iceland 2016 is all the warning England should need not to take for granted a winnable-looking first knockout game of the tournament It was the 10th anniversary last Saturday of the Iceland debacle . Kolbeinn Sigthórsson’s winner sliding underneath Joe Hart’s dive, Wayne Rooney chugging away in midfield, Harry Kane taking corners, and Roy Hodgson being forced to conduct a sullen farewell press conference. It all feels like something from a fever dream but no, it did happen and that really was the state England were in when their Euro 2016 campaign came to an end. Expectations could not have been lower before Gareth Southgate banished the fear. England had to take small steps before becoming contenders again, to the extent that beating Colombia on penalties in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup and winning a knockout tie for the first time in 12 years was an achievement.
