The Guardian FootballEngland must go low against Mexico to hit heights with Total Arsenalball
Thomas Tuchel needs to slow game down so his side can handle altitude challenge – it is time for the low block If any win will do then England do not have to worry about putting on an exhibition of attacking football against Mexico. They have no time to acclimatise to the altitude in Mexico City and will have to box clever if they are to handle the challenge of playing at more than 7,000ft (2,200m) above sea level at the Azteca Stadium. No wonder Thomas Tuchel predicted this World Cup would be defined by suffering. England have prepared for the heat in the US but they are about to step into new territory. Mexico, rampant in their last-32 tie against Ecuador , are close to unstoppable at the Azteca. They have lost there twice in 89 competitive games, will be backed by a passionate crowd and have a physical advantage because of the altitude. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballManzambi dazzles as Switzerland stroll into last 16 with win over Algeria
No wonder Newcastle United are working overtime to wrap up a deal for Johan Manzambi. The secret, if there was such a thing, is well and truly out when it comes to the 20-year-old Freiburg forward who destroyed the Algeria defence to tee up Breel Embolo for Switzerland’s opener in an ominously comfortable victory to reach the last 16. Granit Xhaka, as any good captain would, has tried to keep a lid on soaring expectations, but doing so just got that bit tougher after Switzerland recorded a win in a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1938. This, then, is new territory for this iteration, though the Swiss president, Guy Parmelin, proclaimed they have been in rude health for a while. Up in the VIP seats alongside Gianni Infantino, he presumably ignored dress codes by wearing a bold red cap reminiscent of the one Donald Trump, invisible so far at this tournament, has regularly donned. Rather than the loud Make America Great Again motto, Parmelin’s hat was decorated with the words: “Switzerland great since 1291”. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballSwitzerland v Algeria: World Cup 2026 last 32 – live
⚽️ Kick-off time: 8pm local/1pm AEST/4am BST/11pm EDT ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Mail Martin Portugal are through to the last 16 after coming from behind to defeat Croatia in an all-time classic at Toronto Stadium. Paul MacInnes had the pleasure of witnessing the chaos and high drama first-hand … Rafael Leão dropped to his knees. His cross had just been flicked into the net by Gonçalo Ramos to take Portugal to the last 16 of the World Cup. Leão’s expression was not one of delight, but relief. Billed as the last dance for two footballing icons, it was Luka Modrić who, at the age of 40, had to leave what will surely be his final World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, plays on, and both scored and was even substituted in a match of endless incident. But this was a contest about more than two individuals, who were far from the most influential players on show. Instead this was an old-fashioned World Cup battle between hardened teams, with momentum swinging first one way then the other then back again. Neither side was willing to give up on their dream, and Portugal were the lucky ones in the end. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballAzteca avengers? England return to scene of infamous Maradona handball
Mexico have a formidable record in their iconic stadium but for many it will always be associated with one player As soon as the World Cup draw was completed in Washington DC last December, the date went into the diary, circled in bold by every England fan that hoped to travel, and millions more who knew they would not. Sunday 5 July, Mexico City. If everything went to plan and Thomas Tuchel’s team topped Group L and won their last-32 tie, they would be going to the Azteca Stadium for the last 16. There was another element in play. If Mexico won their group and advanced in the last 32, they would provide the opposition. Just imagine. England to play a critical knockout tie against one of the host nations in their back yard. It is a back yard where Mexico boast a fearsome record, where they feel close to invincible, owing in part to it being about 2,240 metres above sea level. The altitude can spin the heads of opposing players, burn their lungs. It does not affect Mexico. Continue reading...

When a goalkeeper slides and does not get the ball, of course the forward is going to take the contact. Kane is just being punished for being as clever as the officials desire. Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! “For us now, it’s absolutely not a time to panic,” Anthony Barry urged in his now customary half-time debrief, with England 1-0 down to a Democratic Republic of Congo side playing with serious confidence. Thomas Tuchel’s No 2 coldly broke down what was required in the second half – “not a time to play gung-ho football” – but was done dirty by the stat that flashed up on the BBC’s coverage as he spoke. The last time England went on to win a World Cup match in which they conceded first? West Germany in the 1966 final. Yes, you may panic. As an ex-pat Sassenach now living in Edinburgh, capital of the Democratic Republic of Scongo, I can only express my frustration at Harry Kane for depriving the locals of what would inevitably have been an extra bank holiday today.
