The true identity of the World Cup’s breakout fan has been the topic of feverish debate. He is also the tournament’s most revealing character Farewell, then, Freddy – the fan whose face we never saw, the German we never heard speak German, the man forever behind the emoji, the World Cup’s Wizard of Oz. Farewell from X, at least. Shortly after Die Mannschaft’s World Cup elimination , the visiting German fan who became famous on social media through the tournament’s early weeks suddenly disappeared. As the legend of Freddy (or @freddyla7, to use his social media handle) grew and his posts marveling at the majesty of the United States’ gas stations, fast food offerings, stadiums, and highways continued to rack up millions of views, the German – who made a point of never revealing his full name or face – quickly became a Rorschach test for people’s attitudes to online popularity in the age of Elon Musk and Gianni Infantino. Some accepted Freddy for who he claimed to be: a man enjoying himself in the land of the free as he roadtripped in pursuit of World Cup-fueled entertainment. Others of a more conspiracist bent, spying his rapidly amassing pile of brand engagements, saw him as a plant, a fiction, a psyop cooked up by the US government and corporate America to convince us all that actually, a country where it requires a mortgage to get a blood test is still the greatest place on Earth. No wonder Newcastle United are working overtime to wrap up a deal for Johan Manzambi. The secret, if there was such a thing, is well and truly out when it comes to the 20-year-old Freiburg forward who destroyed the Algeria defence to tee up Breel Embolo for Switzerland’s opener in an ominously comfortable victory to reach the last 16. Granit Xhaka, as any good captain would, has tried to keep a lid on soaring expectations, but doing so just got that bit tougher after Switzerland recorded a win in a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1938. This, then, is new territory for this iteration, though the Swiss president, Guy Parmelin, proclaimed they have been in rude health for a while. Up in the VIP seats alongside Gianni Infantino, he presumably ignored dress codes by wearing a bold red cap reminiscent of the one Donald Trump, invisible so far at this tournament, has regularly donned. Germany’s third early World Cup exit in a row is not down to a lack of talent or the name of the coach, but not knowing how they want to play I am stunned. Germany have been eliminated early from a World Cup for the third time in a row. I need time to recover from this. The key word that needs to be discussed is continuity – something the national team have lacked for a decade. German football hasn’t decided how it wants to play . There are constantly new ideas, and time and again new players in new positions. Julian Nagelsmann has experimented too much, and not just during this tournament. Yet developing a team takes years. Germany have always been successful when player roles were clearly defined, the hierarchy was established and the team had a clear concept of how to attack and defend.
