Infantino using private jet in attempt to watch two World Cup matches per day

Fifa president sets gruelling itinerary across tournament World Cup to generate about 9m tons of carbon dioxide Gianni Infantino is planning to attend two World Cup games each day where possible for the rest of the tournament despite the huge distances involved. The Fifa president has access to a private jet provided by Qatar Airways as a value-in-kind element of its sponsorship deal with the world governing body, which will come in useful as Infantino journeys across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Iran twice come from behind to claim draw in World Cup opener with New Zealand

During 101 minutes of action in Los Angeles, Iran were finally able to focus on football. The buildup had been unprecedented, messy and chaotic. But then, in the aftermath of an entertaining draw with New Zealand, Iran’s captain, Mehdi Taremi, described their World Cup as a “disaster”, explaining how the Fifa president, Gianni Infantino, went into their dressing room to hear their concerns. The head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, labelled them the “most oppressed” team at the tournament after being forced to return to Mexico after the game. A charter flight from LAX was scheduled for 11pm local time. It was a lively end to a relatively drama-free occasion, despite pre-match protests and an underlying anxiety around how the team would be greeted by their own supporters. What, really, were the emotions flowing through their veins as they took to the pitch? A few hours earlier, Donald Trump, in France for the G7 summit, said a peace deal had been signed after almost four months of war. Infantino, who in effect recently admitted he is powerless to prevent the chaos that continues to plague Iran’s preparations and overshadow their participation, was up in the VIP seats. World Cup 2026: Fifa urged to remove official over hand gesture; teams hit back at Ceferin; Iran arrive in US – live

⚽️ Iran’s Taremi says tension ‘undermines joy’ ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Wallchart | Mail Sarah Sometimes a team needs a player to have some standout performances to jump start a tournament and Jordan Henderson believes that player for England will be Jude Bellingham. Henderson said: I’m sure he will have a big impact for us in this tournament. I can remember five years ago I gave him his first cap, it was away at Middlesbrough. How much he’s grown, as a player and as a person since then, is incredible really. I had a good idea when I first saw him playing and training, and the way he was. I think everybody forgets how young he is. We do rondos and it’s the youngest in, and there’s people that I think should be going in before him, but he’s always one of the first in the middle to go in. It just reminds us how young he is. I honestly couldn’t speak highly enough of him. Continue reading...

Football Daily | From rock-bottom to World Cup force: Sweden provide life-affirming message

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! A broken leg, surgery, working for David Sullivan, being sacked by David Sullivan, to say things had looked bleak for Sweden’s main men during the Premier League season is an understatement. Alexander Isak and Graham Potter were at a low ebb; the former failed to live up to his record-breaking £125m move to Liverpool, unable to find fitness nor form, ending the campaign with a pitiful four goals in 22 games having never got going at Anfield. Potter was churned out by West Ham in September, deemed unfit to lead the team forward, a low moment for anyone at the London Stadium. In fairness, the team was doomed regardless and while he is leading a team to a 5-1 thrashing of Tunisia at the Geopolitics World Cup, the Hammers are planning for life in the Championship and Sullivan is no longer co-chair . Poor Haiti tried everything to change their destiny against Scotland over the weekend, even swapping Providence for Fortuné in the 86th minute” – Sholem Lenkiewicz. Margaritha coming on for a Curaçao led by D1ck Advocaat is definitely the most alcoholic GWC moment so far. Meanwhile, following on from the idea that Football Daily does not do weekends ( yesterday’s Football Daily letters ), yesterday’s edition ended in my junk folder” – Nigel Sanders [and balance is restored – Football Daily Ed]. Iraq head coach Graham Arnold: ‘We’re capable of doing something that will shock the world’

Australian has had to contend with war, 50C heat and playoffs to steer country to a first World Cup in 40 years Twenty-eight months, 21 games, four rounds, a 117th-minute penalty and a playoff. A coach stuck in Dubai where he watches war start over the water, bombs shaking everything. A team trapped in Baghdad first and Jordan next, missiles flying around them. A scrambled 9,000-mile trip to Mexico where it all rests on one night, the very last country to make it. And, when they do finally land, the hero whose goal took them there is held up by the FBI and the man whose photographs are due to document history is turned back. There may never have been a journey to a World Cup quite like Iraq’s. “It’s been an experience,” Graham Arnold says. And the 62-year-old Australian coach who led them through it all – the “football nut” who is their other “dad” and gets mobbed everywhere he goes – is adamant that it’s not over yet. “Now it’s time to show the world what we’ve got.” Listening to him, you can’t help but believe it. Not least because he did when no one else would. Continue reading...

Iran’s footballers arrive in US amid peace deal but admit tension ‘undermines joy’

Ghalenoi hopes disruption does not impact his team World Cup newsletter | Daily podcast | Download the app The Iran striker Mehdi Taremi has said the controversy and disruption surrounding their involvement at the World Cup undermines Fifa’s message of peace and conceded he felt the tension before arriving in Los Angeles on the eve of their opener, hours before a peace deal was announced . For the first time since the competition’s inception, a host nation has received a country with which it is at war. On Sunday Iran flew to LA from Tijuana, Mexico, where they were relocated amid an ongoing row over visas, but are expected to face opposition from Iranians, many of whom believe the national team do not represent the country. Iran has been beset by problems in the buildup to the tournament, with several officials denied entry to the US . Continue reading...
