The Guardian FootballTransfer window verdict: how every Premier League club fared
The British transfer record was equalled and one club signed no fewer than 18 players in another hectic summer Bringing in Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimarães and Ezri Konsa was a strong start to the window but could Arsenal’s failure to sign a marquee attacker cost them in the long run? They began targeting Morgan Rogers before pivoting to Vinícius Júnior when the England forward went to Chelsea, only to end up disappointed when Vinícius signed a new deal with Real Madrid. Julián Alvarez made clear he had no intention of joining from Atlético Madrid in the final days of the window and Arsenal kept their powder dry despite sanctioning the exits of Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona and Ethan Nwaneri to Borussia Dortmund. Should Gabriel Martinelli complete his move to Al-Hilal as expected in the coming days – the Saudi Pro League window remains open – a few injuries could leave Arteta short. Ed Aarons Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballNot just big in Japan: Zion Suzuki has what it takes to follow Emiliano Martínez
He is replacing a World Cup winner and is his country’s first Premier League keeper, but Villa’s new signing has already dealt with harder challenges In November 2001, the first Japanese goalkeeper to play English league football conceded a goal within the first minute of his debut. Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi may have struggled for second-tier Portsmouth, conceding 21 times in his 12 league games after being spotted by the then director of football, Harry Redknapp, but he also produced some world-class saves and had glowing things to say about the Royal Mail. Replaced by a 42-year-old Dave Beasant, Kawaguchi nevertheless remains a cult hero on the south coast , as a standing ovation in his final game demonstrated. Despite going on to play 116 times for Japan, he never made the jump to the Premier League. Now though, finally, Japan has a No 1 in the top flight. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballFootball transfer rumours: Chelsea’s Mudryk to reunite with Lampard at Coventry?
Today’s rumours broke you once, made you strong Cody Gakpo ’s performances went south last season and now his entire personage might follow, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly preparing an offer in the region of £70m to bring him to north London. There appears to be some mixed messages floating around about this potential deal. The Mail say Liverpool “have no plans to sell Gakpo” and that “it would take a huge sum to change their stance”, but these things are fluid. The Athletic say “Liverpool have no intention of selling”, but also, and in the same sentence, that they “would judge his value relative to other deals this summer, including Morgan Rogers’ transfer to Chelsea”. So, in short, Spurs will have to whip out their recently-discovered XXL chequebook if they want to get this one over the line. Talking about Chelsea , “multiple Premier League clubs” have contacted them to ask about the availability of Mykhailo Mudryk, recently freed from a doping ban, says the Mirror. They name only one of them: Coventry City , coached by two-time former Stamford Bridge manager Frank Lampard. The Sun specify that “two more Prem sides are believed to have enquired, while there is interest from three clubs in Europe”. The Mirror’s report on the battle for the Ukrainian’s services is inevitably, but pleasingly, headlined “ Mud Fight ”. Continue reading...
