The Guardian FootballFootball Daily | A 64-team World Cup? More is more when it comes to Fifa-land
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! So, here we are. After a century of matches, and for the first time in history, the World Cup has entered its sixth week. But is it about to get longer? Gianni Infantino didn’t even get through the first of an agonising two-day rest period before dropping the hint that Fifa would be “examining and discussing” the potential for the 2030 tournament to be a 64-team affair. Some may say – not Football Daily, of course – that this was a handy way to move the news cycle on after Balogun-gate, Cable-gate and the ever-growing industry of suspicion that is VAR-gate. But let’s take it at face value: Fifa appears to be giving this some thought and, after years spent expanding virtually every tournament in their jurisdiction, it has previous. While largely agreeing with Rich Zahradnik’s complaint about your faux Private Eye approach, may I be the 1,057th person to point out that Dundee United’s victory at Stirling Albion (yesterday’s Beyond the GWC, full email edition) doesn’t mean that they progress to round two yet as they still have three games to play in their group” – Stuart Ainsworth (and 1,056 others). In yesterday’s Memory Lane (full email edition) featuring the England 1982 World Cup Panini spread, you finished with ‘want, want, want’ and I can free you from desire. I have the full ‘82 album, complete with the scribbles of a newly-obsessed eight-year-old football fan and the dog ears of an adult who still treasures memories of the tournament. My parents supported its completion as a distraction from our migration from Switzerland to Australia and created a moment in time for me that means all my passwords still start with Zico and my favourite coffee table book remains Baumann’s ‘Fussball Weltmeisterschaft 1982 Spanien’. I’m happy to loan you both the album and book for as long as it takes to satisfy your needs. Yours in love of el jogo bonito” – Phil Hess [thanks Phil, we probably couldn’t afford the return postage, but appreciate the kind offer – Football Daily Ed]. The Guardian Football‘Give me another medal!’: meet the hair stylist who has taken over the World Cup
Jayèma on working with England stars, a new look for Raphinha and forging a friendship with Lamine Yamal’s family Jayèma has had a World Cup like no other. Who else but the London hair stylist has worked with footballers from England, Brazil, the United States and Canada, and hung out with Lamine Yamal and his family, while having no idea who Lionel Messi is until recently? Who else but Jayèma has been to her first game of men’s football and left before the end of a tumultuous match between Mexico and England at the Azteca Stadium because the atmosphere was too “rowdy”? Who else has made so many footballers feel especially good about their hair and themselves, but the hardest-working stylist and male groomer in elite sport? Continue reading...

The Belgian FA, and you can assume a large proportion of the football world, has been left “astonished” by Fifa’s decision after lobbying by Donald Trump to reverse the suspension given to the striker for his red card in the team’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina . He is now free to play in the last-16 game against Belgium. Sources have told the Guardian that Trump made three calls to Fifa, starting from Wednesday, to ensure that the change was made. The Guardian FootballLionel Messi and football’s ageless wonders can excel into their 40s | Emma Hayes
Argentina’s captain leads the way for veteran strikers at World Cup. They have different styles, but all have shown their worth I would be shocked if the record for the most goals scored by a player in a World Cup – Just Fontaine’s 13 in 1958 – is not broken this summer. That is how elite the world’s top forwards are. They are all pushing each other to keep scoring more. We are so lucky to be watching them at the same time. I also believe, because of the skill set required to be a world-class, modern-day finisher, we are going to see more and more playing into their 40s, so much so that it may be possible that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could go to another World Cup. The Guardian FootballWorld Cup Q&A: England reporter Jacob Steinberg answers your questions – live
Jacob was in Atlanta last night to witness England’s Harry Kane-led comeback against DR Congo. He is online now answering all your questions about the Three Lions’ chances against Mexico, England’s defensive frailties and anything else you’d like to know Sign in or sign up to post your question in the comments nwake3 asks: How do you think Mexico will approach Sunday’s game? Low-block or all-out? Will they play to win? Jacob says: Unlike Thomas Tuchel I was awake for the Mexico v Ecuador game and expect Mexico to be all out again. I think Madueke was staying high and with Masuaku, the DRC left-back. My reading of the goal is Sadiki confuses the defence by running from midfield. Konsa should take him, he doesn’t, Spence gets dragged over and that creates the overload. It wasn’t really that complicated. If Konsa takes Sadiki then Spence can stay with Cipenga. I think. The Guardian FootballCape Verde’s Sidny Lopes Cabral: ‘If you’re like “oh, it’s Messi”, you’re gonna lose your mind’
The full-back on defying the odds, dealing with racism, Cape Verde’s party people and taking on Lionel Messi “When we saw 1%, we just laughed.” Cape Verde liked those odds, and so did Sidny Lopes Cabral. “They gave us a 1% chance of reaching the next round, but we showed how big 1% is,” the defender says. He has always known there was a chance however small it looked, in Rotterdam or anywhere: in Germany, where he froze in the fifth tier earning £850 a month, using bin bags for curtains, and in America too. His mates told him he was crazy; he told his mum not to worry. “I always told them, ‘hey, I’m going to be a great football player: I’m gonna reach the top.’ And I’m living in my dream now.” Now, an island of 300,000 people, the story of this World Cup, face the champions. And Lopes Cabral, the left-back and the second-youngest player in the squad at 23, faces arguably the best footballer of all time . “I hope I get some nice pictures of me standing next to him,” Lopes Cabral says. “I have no words to describe how I feel, how we all do. Back in Cape Verde, every game there are parties. In the Netherlands, in France, everywhere Cape Verdean people live. In Rotterdam it’s crazy.” Continue reading...
