In the year and a half leading up to the kick-off, Donald Trump had threatened to annex tournament co-host Canada, and to invade the other co-host, Mexico; he was at war with one of the tournament’s participants, Iran. Harsh travel restrictions were preventing fans from Senegal, Ivory Coast and Haiti from getting visas. Ticket prices were outrageous. Hotels weren’t filling up as promised. England and Norway fans have flocked to Miami in their tens of thousands to enjoy the football and sunshine It is not just another morning on Ocean Drive, where brashness mingles with brilliance and grandeur sits unashamedly alongside the grotesque. A Huddersfield Town flag is being hung from one of the art deco hotels that make this area of Miami Beach a living, decadent museum. Two Norwegians in national team shirts cycle past, the woman adjusting a viking helmet before pedalling to catch up. To locals playing volleyball beneath the sand dunes as usual, the sideshow is at once inescapable and remote. Not even Miami will have seen a party of this nature. Around 30,000 England fans are due to converge here by Saturday but they will be given a run for their money by those baying for Norway, who have offered some of this World Cup’s enduring spectacles. He had led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2020-21 so when the German publication Sport Bild named its coach of the season, it had to give it to him. “Yeah, there was no way out,” the England head coach says, with a smile. “Because if Jürgen Klopp won at the same time the Charity Shield they give it to him …” The line is delivered in trademark style: deadpan, apart from the twinkle in his eye and it is especially funny to imagine Klopp’s reaction when he reads it. What happened next for Tuchel was less of a laughing matter. As a part of the deal, he gave an interview to Sport Bild and during it he joked about how he would have “no problem” bringing Erling Haaland to Chelsea and playing him up front with Romelu Lukaku.
