The Guardian FootballBowie gets Pocognoli off mark with Scotland victory in North Macedonia
This was an occasion on which Scotland dare not stumble. By the time Kieron Bowie smashed home a seventh minute opener against a North Macedonia side not without its troubles to seek, it was already clear they would not. Bowie afforded Sébastien Pocognoli his first goal as the Scotland manager. Later, the Belgian had his maiden victory confirmed. Anything else, against such a dismal level of opposition, would have been worthy of significant Scottish embarrassment. John McGinn’s 22nd goal for his country, coming from the penalty spot, meant the scoreline at least almost reflected Scotland’s dominance. Only Scott McKenna’s late sending off and a failure to notch three, four or five could have irked Pocognoli. Scotland remain alive and kicking in section B1 of the Nations League while aware they will face far, far stiffer challenges. Scotland needed to be professional in North Macedonia and met that task appropriately. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballThrown in with Giggs and Beckham: how Manchester United tried to get Billy Kenny
Former Everton midfielder, known as the ‘Goodison Gazza’, recalls being made to feel special by Alex Ferguson in this autobiography extract “So this is the scouser ya been goin’ on aboot then …” My face turned Manchester United red. Scanning the room full of smiles and staring eyes, I identified the mystery Scottish voice as the man who’d just become the first player to score more than 20 league goals for the club since George Best in the 1960s. “Good answer,” replied Brian McClair after following up on my smile and nod by asking whether I supported Everton or Liverpool. “Ye’ll dee well ’ere laddie.” Brian Kidd had just introduced me to the Man United first team by silencing the room to draw attention to my presence. “Lads, this is Billy from up the road,” he said. I was still starstruck from seeing all these famous faces as my chauffeur for the day, Eric Harrison, pulled up in the car park at The Cliff a few minutes earlier. Paul McGrath. Mark Hughes. Bryan Robson. Kevin Moran. Norman Whiteside. I ticked them all off in my head. Thank fuck I was developing an ear for everyday Glaswegian because after a bit of piss-taking from the first-teamers about being a scouser, I found myself standing in an office at the end of a short and narrow corridor, shaking hands with another one. The Guardian FootballMoving the Goalposts | Women’s Ballon d’Or 2026 power rankings: will a new winner be crowned?
Race to be named the world’s best female player is the most open in years. But who should claim the prize? 1 Melchie Dumornay (OL Lyonnes/Haiti) Yes, Dumornay was part of a team that lost 4-0 to Barcelona in last season’s Champions League final , but her influence in the OL Lyonnes midfield as they cruised to a domestic treble stepped up a gear. The technically brilliant 23-year-old midfielder was named player of the year by the French players’ union, and her importance to Lyonnes was most clearly demonstrated by her absence through injury for their 2-1 loss to Arsenal in their Champions League semi-final first leg. She returned for the second leg and produced a player-of-the-match performance in a 3-1 win . Dumornay scored five goals in Lyonnes’ Champions League run and was named in the team of the tournament. 2 Ewa Pajor (Barcelona/Poland) After losing five Champions League finals, Pajor shook off her ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ mantle in style with two goals as Barcelona thrashed Lyonnes in Oslo. The 29-year-old’s 11 goals in European competition last season matched Alexia Putella’s 2021-22 tally, which has not been bettered since Ada Hegerberg’s record-breaking 15 in 2017-18. Pajor also scored 16 goals in Liga F, behind only her Barcelona teammate Claudia Pina who scored 21. Continue reading...
