Our picture editor chooses his favourite images from the tournament including Lionel Messi’s cathedral, that delicious diving header from Jude Bellingham and a humbling scene in Gaza What makes a great World Cup photograph? Now there’s a question with myriad answers. Composition, newsworthiness, emotional resonance, expert timing and luck can all contribute to varying degrees. ‘A brilliant reprieve, a unifying force’: America falls in love with World Cup

Packed stadiums, record TV viewers, and an outlet for joyous multiculturalism under attack by Trump – the tournament has taken the US by storm There were plenty of reasons to believe the US hosting the World Cup would be a disaster. In the year and a half leading up to the kick-off, Donald Trump had threatened to annex tournament co-host Canada, and to invade the other co-host, Mexico; he was at war with one of the tournament’s participants, Iran. Harsh travel restrictions were preventing fans from Senegal, Ivory Coast and Haiti from getting visas. Ticket prices were outrageous. Hotels weren’t filling up as promised. Fifa was introducing “hydration breaks” during games, allowing TV commercials in what appeared to be a shameless cash grab that threatened the flow of play. Continue reading...

‘What’s more American than baseball?’: World Cup brings fans, chants and verve to the national pastime

The crossover in the American sports calendar has made for a compelling collision of cultures, from Scots in Boston to a new English folk hero in Atlanta First they sang for Harry Kane. Then they sang for Michael Harris II. The Atlanta Braves center-fielder is not someone many Major League Baseball fans would consider a household name. A local kid made good, he has established himself as an above-average, everyday outfielder and at age 25 is enjoying a career-best season, but his face doesn’t dominate billboards and ads in the way of Shohei Ohtani or Aaron Judge. ‘Is he a nice guy? No. He’s a good guy’: how Harry Kane became an England great

Figures who worked with striker in his formative years recall a self-belief – even when his talent did not stand out There is another version of reality in which Harry Kane is not England’s greatest goalscorer but a goalkeeper. On his first day at Ridgeway Rovers, his first club, the coach Dave Bricknell asked whether anyone fancied going in goal. A six-year-old Kane threw up his hand – and he was pretty good. “I thought I’d found a goalkeeper,” Bricknell says. “At that age, you don’t get many kids that don’t mind standing in front of a ball.” It was quickly pointed out to him by parents that Kane was even better on the pitch. But that wasn’t the only time Kane almost strayed down the goalkeeping path. Continue reading...

Refereeing at this World Cup has been fine, we don’t need input of Tuchel and Trump | Chris Foy

Give or take the odd error, officials have got it right on most occasions, while VAR has helped them when they haven’t Thomas Tuchel was critical of the refereeing at the World Cup after England’s win against Mexico , describing it as unreliable, erratic and not good enough. His comments struck me as reverse psychology – the referees have generally been OK, with some positive decisions made, but there have also been occasions when they have not got things right. Like everyone, referees cannot be perfect. Egypt claimed they were victims of an injustice against Argentina on Tuesday but the decisions to disallow an Egypt goal and let Argentina’s winner stand were correct. On the first one there was a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martínez in the attacking possession phase – a shirt pull and studs on Martínez’s right foot – and there is no time limit or ceiling on the number of passes to be taken into account.
