The Guardian FootballVinícius Júnior leads Brazil’s star cast in blockbuster show against sorry Scotland | Paul MacInnes
Miami is still a city where the stars come out to play – and on Wednesday one shone brighter than anyone else “Water so clear you can see to the bottom, hundred thousand dollar cars e’ybody got ’em. Ain’t no surprise in the club to see Sly Stallone, Miami my second home.” So said Will Smith, and the actor-rapper’s observations ring true to this day. Miami is still a city where the stars come out to play. On this night, however, and unfortunately from a Scottish perspective , Vinícius Júnior came to play his way through their defence. Just as thousands of Scots colonised Boston, so it appeared that the entire upper middle class of São Paulo had come to Florida for this big game. Brazilian celebrities had followed too, the most obvious being Ronaldinho, who not only officially signed for a third division Italian side while in the city, but was afforded a VVIP spot just outside the players’ tunnel where he could greet the players and Carlo Ancelotti, the coach, as they made their way out. The Guardian FootballScotland’s World Cup dream hanging by a thread after Vinícius sparks Brazil victory
Scotland will now play the waiting game. The trouble is, as they hang around to discover whether a place in the last 32 can be secured as among the leading eight third placed teams in this World Cup, it is legitimate to question the point of it all. Scotland’s on field contribution to this tournament has been pitiful. Defeat to Brazil can and should happen. The ragged nature of Scotland’s output in Miami, the utterly punchless nature of their play – again – until desperation set in means they should enter the knockout phase with red faces should that come to pass. Steve Clarke’s men have been outscored by Haiti in Group C plus New Zealand, Iran and Cape Verde elsewhere. Continue reading...
