Now there is a surprising danger of them having something else in common: being a divisive presence in their national teams. On 21 October, during a parliamentary committee meeting, politician Jeong Yeon-wook put a question to acting Korea Football Association (KFA) president Lee Yong-soo, that took a story out of the sports pages and into the national conversation. “It is said that recently, within the national team squad, players have been calling him not by his name but as ‘No 7’ or ‘that person’. Do you know who that is?” Lee then replied, “Are you referring to Son Heung-min?” Jeong went on: “So it appears to be true. … It has also been revealed that the national team’s leadership is causing discord and has broken down overall.” Lee declined to comment. Outstanding footballer who won two European Cups with Internazionale and a World Cup runners-up medal with Italy The Italian footballer Sandro Mazzola, who has died aged 83, was a supremely gifted forward who won two European Cups and four Serie A titles during 17 years with his only club, Internazionale of Milan. With Italy’s national side he won the European Championship in 1968 and played in the 4-1 defeat by Pelé ’s Brazil in the final of the 1970 World Cup. He was six years old when his father, Valentino Mazzola, the captain of an invincible Torino team and of Italy, died aged 30, along with the rest of the team, when their chartered plane, returning in bad weather from a friendly fixture in Lisbon in May 1949, crashed into the Superga hill overlooking Turin, killing everyone on board.
