The Guardian FootballMilos Kerkez: ‘I’m delighted – Andoni Iraola is the perfect fit for Liverpool’
Full-back on being reunited with former manager, the shock of Arne Slot’s sacking and being mistaken for a bridegroom It has been quite the summer for Milos Kerkez. There was time at home in Serbia, holidays in Montenegro and Spain, a frantic knock on his bedroom door one day to tell him that Arne Slot had been sacked, an unexpected reunion with Andoni Iraola shortly afterwards, and thousands of well‑wishes sent his way after being photographed escorting a bride into church in his hometown of Vrbas. Congratulations on the wedding are also extended at the start of our interview on a rooftop terrace at Liverpool’s team hotel. “No! This is wrong, everyone gets this wrong!” the full-back exclaims. “It was my oldest brother. In Serbia it is normal for the younger brothers to take the bride to the church. That’s what I did and now everyone thinks I got married. It was Rade, not me. There are three of us – Rade is the oldest, I’m the youngest and Marko is the middle one. I keep having to explain to people that I never got married. I was going around the club when we started back and people were congratulating me. I’m like: ‘No, I’m not ready for this yet!’” Continue reading...

The Guardian Football‘He’s back’: Zinedine Zidane named France head coach in long-awaited homecoming
Four-year deal agreed with successor to Deschamps ‘I have so many emotions, I am ready for the challenge’ For Tuesday’s front page, L’Équipe simply went with “ Il revient ” – “He’s back” – echoing the newspaper’s 2005 headline when Zinedine Zidane came out of international retirement. At the time, the midfielder’s upcoming return was seen as a major boost to Les Bleus ’ ailing World Cup qualifying campaign. There was a similar sense of anticipation now as the roads around the French Football Federation headquarters in Paris were closed off for Zidane’s unveiling as head coach. A crowd of France fans had gathered outside by the overground Métro tracks with flags, flares and drums, as more than a hundred journalists and TV cameras were ushered into the building. The fact that Zidane would be next in line to lead France after Didier Deschamps had been an open secret for several years and by the end of the World Cup his arrival was all but confirmed. The new head coach entered the press conference room on Tuesday morning only minutes after his appointment was confirmed by the FFF’s executive committee, but the feeling in France was that the occasion was a couple of decades in the making.
