The Guardian FootballSpain’s Nico Williams hits out at ‘completely unnecessary’ Uruguay tackle that injured him
Yéremy Pino has avoided fracture, Spain reveal His and Williams’s injuries described as moderate Spain’s Nico Williams has strongly criticised the “completely unnecessary” tackle by a Uruguay player which left him with another injury. The winger and Yéremy Pino were hurt as qualification for the last 32 came at a heavy price, though the European champions issued a more positive update than expected on the players’ condition. Spain described the injuries sustained by Pino and Williams as moderate. Pino had been expected to miss the rest of the World Cup and there were concerns they had lost Williams too. The Guardian FootballWho would the US need to beat to win the World Cup? Probably only Spain, France and England
Mauricio Pochettino’s team won their group after some impressive performances. But they’d probably need to beat some of the world’s best to claim the title Football Unites the World … in wishing it had paid more attention in applied mathematics class. Or so the Fifa slogan could have been expanded to say, given the mind-warping that arose from the formula for slicing the newly expanded 48-team tournament down to 32 sides for the first knockout round . After all, why do a random draw when you can build a matrix with 495 possible scenarios in order to assign the fixtures for the eight best third-placers? Anyway, what matters is that Mauricio Pochettino’s team will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, and no new format is going to stop us from – in time-honored fashion – speculating wildly about what may happen next while we still have the chance, with the potential for American wins rated using one of the mantra-loving manager’s motivational rallying cries of choice. The Guardian FootballThe World Cup is undressing the myth of Trump’s American homogeneity
The 2026 World Cup has become a rebuke to Trump’s homogeneous vision of America, revealing a tournament – and a US team – shaped by migration and diversity Following the Department of Homeland Security on social media is a bit like wandering through a casino at 4am. Sooner or later, you’ll see something that makes you go: How did we get here ? There was one of those moments earlier this month. Days after the US opened their World Cup campaign with a 4-1 romp over Paraguay, DHS marked the occasion by posting an image of Chris Richards, Sergiño Dest and Folarin Balogun exulting beneath the headline “DEFEND THE HOMELAND” and the caption “OUR SOIL”. The Guardian FootballUruguay’s shock early exit ends with red card as Baena sends Spain through
Uruguay are out of the World Cup again and for all that it ended in anger, a red card and a touchline row, it is nobody’s fault but their own. “3 million dreams,” the banner said high in the stands in Guadalajara but this was a recurring nightmare. Divided and dysfunctional, led by a man who barely even says buenos dias to his players, unable to get beyond a draw with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, on the night when it was all or nothing against Spain they could manage only one shot on target, which came in the 83rd minute and carried barely the slightest threat. Spain, meanwhile, had only one, and that didn’t carry much of a threat either. But a dreadful mistake from the 40-year-old Fernando Muslera allowed Álex Baena’s shot to slip into the net just before the half-time break from which the goalkeeper did not return. Uruguay fought but didn’t play much football and so they fell. For the second World Cup running they failed to get through the group and if four years ago that was on goals scored and could be explained by the teams they faced – South Korea, Ghana and Portugal – this time the opponents only made it worse, demanding a far deeper analysis. This from Sid Lowe’s preview of today’s game : When Uruguay were beaten 5-1 by the USA in November, he described himself as “toxic”, admitting: “Those who have a relationship with me come out of it worse. There are toxic people who only see errors, who demand, who correct, who are never satisfied with anything, who only like to talk about work, who go to eat and take a newspaper with them because they don’t want to integrate with the rest. But do you know what that behaviour is based on? Fear. One doesn’t enjoy winning; he fears losing much more.” Continue reading...
