Uefa has to show backbone: concrete action can make Fifa’s World Cup plans untenable | Nick Ames

European football has shown an increased willingness to talk tough with Fifa but words can only be wielded so many times • FA joins criticism of Fifa plan to sell off World Cup stakes As the World Cup neared its conclusion, one leading figure in European football pondered how Gianni Infantino might attempt to rinse away the damaging stain of the Folarin Balogun scandal . It all came down to money. “He will just announce more funds for everyone,” was the gist, although the tournament passed without any explanation of how Fifa would carve up its record $15bn (£11.2bn) haul. That was the tip of the iceberg. Infantino’s plan to sell chunks of the World Cup to private investors , announced on Tuesday, nine days after the final, has sent shockwaves around the sport and left senior personnel scrambling. There is little time for a coordinated response given Fifa, at the height of what passes for football’s holiday period, has given FAs until 19 September to decide whether to accept the initial $20m payment that would effectively count as endorsement of the new scheme. Football transfer rumours: Eli Junior Kroupi to boost Barcelona attack?

Today’s tittle-tattle is walking on sunshine After waving Robert Lewandowski off into the sunset at the end of last season, Barcelona are in need of a new striker. The only one on their books scored the winner in the World Cup final. Julián Alvarez is at the centre of a Spanish tug of war this summer – he wants to leave Atlético Madrid and is wanted by Barcelona and Real Madrid , who had a £129m bid rejected in June. With Atlético suits so far refusing to sit down with Joan Laporta for talks in a fashionable Catalan restaurant, the Barça president is beginning to look elsewhere. Naturally, Laporta’s attention has turned to Bournemouth. Eli Junior Kroupi had an outstanding first season in English football and is said to be the basis of Barcelona’s Plan B up front. Bournemouth insist the 20-year-old is not for sale and, according to reports, value the striker at £110m anyway – about the going rate for a good young player in the Premier League. Other European heavyweights such as Paris Saint-Germain , Arsenal and, er, Tottenham are circling. Chelsea’s João Pedro is said to be an unrealistic Plan C for Barça. Maybe Plan D was Danny Welbeck. Where all 20 Premier League clubs should strengthen before the season

Manchester United and Arsenal need midfielders, Liverpool should sign a winger and Chelsea require a goalkeeper By Opta Analyst Declan Rice was worked to the bone by Arsenal last season, playing 4,456 minutes in all competitions. This showed at points during the World Cup, when the midfielder’s body looked on the verge of breaking down. Arsenal need high-quality reinforcements in the centre of the pitch so Rice can occasionally have a rest. Christian Nørgaard struggled to get on to the park last season, with Mikel Arteta seemingly not trusting the former Brentford captain. An extra midfield option could prove crucial to Arsenal retaining their crown. Continue reading...
