Roberto Mancini returns as Italy head coach with Claudio Ranieri named technical director

Mancini replaces Gattuso for second spell in charge Ranieri takes over from Paolo Maldini in overseeing role Roberto Mancini has agreed to be Italy head coach for a second time, the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Giovanni Malagò, said on Tuesday, also confirming Claudio Ranieri would take over as technical director. Mancini replaces Gennaro Gattuso, who left the post in April after Italy failed to qualify for a third World Cup in succession, and returns to a job he held between 2018 and 2023. He led the national team to European Championship glory in 2021 with a penalty shootout victory over England at Wembley but then failed to reach the 2022 World Cup and a slow start to Euro 2024 qualifying. In total, Mancini managed Italy for 58 matches during his first spell and at club level has managed Inter, Fiorentina and Manchester City, where he spent three years and guided them to their first Premier League title in 2011-12 . Sunderland close in on Dayann Methalie signing after Newcastle back off

Toulouse defender expected to cost about £26m Newcastle still looking for defensive reinforcements Sunderland are poised to sign the long-time Newcastle target Dayann Methalie from Toulouse. The France Under-21s defender, who can play left-back or wingback and also operate in the centre, has attracted widespread interest this summer but Régis Le Bris now appears close to acquiring him for about £26m. Newcastle had extensively scouted Methalie, who made 27 Ligue 1 appearances for Toulouse last season, and reportedly tried to sign him in January. The club have now indicated they opted against the idea of recruiting the 20-year-old and have not submitted a bid this summer. Nonetheless, Methalie appeared an ideal fit for Newcastle’s new transfer policy of recruiting young players in the £20m-£40m price bracket. Continue reading...

Milos Kerkez: ‘I’m delighted – Andoni Iraola is the perfect fit for Liverpool’

Full-back on being reunited with former manager, the shock of Arne Slot’s sacking and being mistaken for a bridegroom It has been quite the summer for Milos Kerkez. There was time at home in Serbia, holidays in Montenegro and Spain, a frantic knock on his bedroom door one day to tell him that Arne Slot had been sacked, an unexpected reunion with Andoni Iraola shortly afterwards, and thousands of well‑wishes sent his way after being photographed escorting a bride into church in his hometown of Vrbas. Congratulations on the wedding are also extended at the start of our interview on a rooftop terrace at Liverpool’s team hotel. “No! This is wrong, everyone gets this wrong!” the full-back exclaims. “It was my oldest brother. In Serbia it is normal for the younger brothers to take the bride to the church. That’s what I did and now everyone thinks I got married. It was Rade, not me. There are three of us – Rade is the oldest, I’m the youngest and Marko is the middle one. I keep having to explain to people that I never got married. I was going around the club when we started back and people were congratulating me. I’m like: ‘No, I’m not ready for this yet!’” Continue reading...
