Erling Haaland fires Norway into last 16 with dramatic winner against Côte d’Ivoire

Decision vindicated. The Norway coach, Ståle Solbakken, had taken a major gamble in resting almost his entire side in the final group game against France, drawing stiff criticism, not least from those who had paid hundreds of dollars to witness a showdown between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé. As Solbakken said, the decision would stand or fall on the result of this game. Norway are in the last 16, players and fans celebrating with a communal Viking row led by Martin Ødegaard, and therefore his policy can be considered justified. Continue reading...

Every World Cup needs a cult hero: 2026 has given us touchline dreamboat Sebastián Beccacece

The Ecuador manager is a beautifully manicured buzz of energy with Bolivarian liberation in his heart. The tournament is all the better for him An underrated pleasure for spectators at every World Cup is observing the managers. If club football, an increasingly regimented domain of set pieces and systems, is all about structure, international soccer is much more a matter of style – and at this tournament, the theatrics of the sport’s touchline strutters have been rich with emotion and figurative power. Didier Deschamps patrols his technical area with the watchful pride of an outer-arrondissement charcutier . Luis de la Fuente is a veteran wealth manager at Banco Santander. Japan’s Hajime Moriyasu is about to go postal at his dreary office job in a Kiyoshi Kurosawa film. Socceroos coach Tony Popovic looks like he’s on his way to MC a wedding at Sydney’s King Tomislav Croatian Club . And Carlo Ancelotti is … well, he’s just Carlo Ancelotti, a man with Champions League-winning eyebrows whose fierce allegiance to his three-piece suit, even through the worst of a North American summer, suggests he’s somehow in command of his own climate. Follow Pep and find scoring options: Maresca’s Manchester City in-tray

New manager needs to gain true backing from the hierarchy by stepping out from Guardiola’s shadow How Enzo Maresca follows Pep Guardiola is the searing question he has to answer – from fans, pundits, football scribes and, more vitally, where it matters: on the pitch. In 10 era-defining years Guardiola claimed 20 titles (including three Community Shields). Maresca was at his side for the treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League of 2022-23. This is one calling card for the players he has to convince to follow him. Another is a single season, 2020-21, in charge of City’s elite development squad when they won the Premier League 2 title. Others are leading Leicester into the Premier League in 2024, and winning with Chelsea the 2025 Conference League and that summer’s Club World Cup with a 3-0 defeat of Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Over to you, Enzo. Continue reading...

The World Cup’s two competing realities: brilliant action and off-field injustices | Jonathan Wilson

All of the critiques of this tournament have proven valid and warranted, even as the action on the pitch has delighted us • Predict the winner | Daily podcast | Download our app The football has taken over. Ultimately, that’s what always happens. Football is an incredibly resilient sport, the World Cup an incredibly resilient tournament. It has withstood authoritarian leaders and corruption scandals, the horrific exploitation of migrant workers and military dictatorships, and it looks as though it will survive sky-high ticket prices and immigration policies that make a mockery of Gianni Infantino’s claim that this is the most inclusive World Cup of all time. This is not to say that those are not major issues. The situation with Iran has been unique, but the treatment of the team has been outrageous . That they could pass through the tournament unbeaten, eliminated only because of a last-gasp Austria goal against Algeria, is remarkable enough in itself, but they could surely have achieved far more had they not had to switch training camps, been allowed their full backroom staff and been able to travel to games without punitive restrictions. This is an extract from Soccer Desk: World Cup edition, a newsletter from the Guardian US that will run regularly during the tournament. Subscribe for free here. Continue reading...
