After all the talk about the challenges of breaking down a grim back seven, the bigger worry for Thomas Tuchel in New Jersey was Panama’s lack of fear. There was no sign of the underdogs borrowing from the Carlos Queiroz playbook against an anxious England, who are starting to give off the distinct whiff of a team whose World Cup is destined to end in a calamity of some sort in the knockouts. Make no mistake: England will be going home if they continue to defend like this against anyone with a functioning attack. Tuchel will not be fooled. Although his team secured top spot in Group L by wearing down Panama in the end , an achievement mainly down to Jude Bellingham again stepping up with two moments of class after a skittish first half, England were far from convincing and spent long spells demonstrating that anyone who thought an unusually gung-ho lineup would provide a vision of a post-Declan Rice world was sorely mistaken. England are not going to win the World Cup playing like this. They will not get very far in the knockout rounds unless they can sharpen up. But at least they have made it into them, the dream still alive, after they secured top spot in Group L on a slow-burn occasion when the result meant everything. Thomas Tuchel needed to restore momentum after the bore draw against Ghana in game two, to rekindle the excitement from the opening game against Croatia, which England won 4-2 . The manager wanted to prove a point. It did not really happen and for the opening 45 minutes it was even possible to fear the worst. England head coach has selection dilemmas, not helped by fitness issues with Declan Rice and Reece James In an ideal world, the only selection conundrum before England face Panama would be whether to rest Harry Kane or let the striker use a dead rubber against Group L’s fourth seeds as a chance to keep up with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and the other Golden Boot contenders . Yet any hope Tuchel had of giving the reserves a run out in New Jersey surely disappeared when his side drew 0-0 with Ghana on Tuesday and failed to win the group with a game to spare. Now complications remain. The schedule is brutal for England, who face a potential run of four games in 13 days, and Tuchel has a dilemma. This, after all, was surely the one that Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney had marked down as a rare day off for Kane. But England still have to clinch top spot, so weighing up whether to get Kane to ease off before the last 32 is not as big a concern for Tuchel as working out how much of a risk to take with his rotation.
