Versatile Bruno Guimarães gives Mikel Arteta options to shuffle midfield pack | Ed Aarons

While able to play deeper, the onus will also be on Arsenal’s £75m signing to provide creativity in an attack that has struggled to break down the low block Data shows deal could be another set-piece masterstroke If there was one of his many assets Newcastle supporters grew to love above all about Bruno Guimarães then it was best summed up by the man himself after being unveiled as Arsenal’s new £75m signing . “That’s a tough one,” said the Brazil midfielder when asked what fans in north London can expect from him. “I would say I can pass the ball, run a lot and play like a warrior. I’ll never give up.” After more than four years on Tyneside and having seen Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali precede Eddie Howe’s departure, Guimarães – who was devastated after missing a penalty for the Seleção in their defeat against Norway in the last 16 of the World Cup – was determined to seize his opportunity. Premier League managers have never been less English, title-winning or secure in their jobs

Huge turnover between seasons means 11 clubs start 2026-27 led by people with under a year in their dugout Nine of the 20 Premier League clubs will begin the 2026-27 season with a different man in the dugout than the one who ended the last campaign. The only other seasons which started with so many men making their managerial debut for top flight clubs were 1888-89 and 1946-47; the inaugural season of league football and the first following the second world war. Neither occurred under normal circumstances yet the level of turnover this summer does not feel unusual. Job security has never meant less in the Premier League. Adding in the recently appointed pair of Roberto De Zerbi and Michael Carrick – confirmed in March and May respectively – means 11 teams are led by coaches with less than a year in their hotseat. The median tenure of Premier League managers at the start of each season has never been so low. The most recent similar season was 2016-17. Heading into that campaign, 10 clubs had managers with less than one year in the role. But with respect to the current Premier League crop, the relatively new head coaches that summer included Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Jürgen Klopp and José Mourinho. All had either already won the Premier League or would go on to do so. Continue reading...

West Ham sink Pompey in Carabao Cup as Sullivan ignores advice to stay away

In an unseasonable black bomber jacket, with heavy duty company beside him, David Sullivan took his seat. Against the advice of the stadium’s operators, unbowed by serious allegations placed against his name and the weight of public opinion, West Ham’s major shareholder, the former co-chair, sat with arms crossed, always conspicuous by his presence. By beating Portsmouth in relative comfort, West Ham, the club where Sullivan’s name is no longer above the door, had secured a heartening Carabao Cup passage to the second round. There, they will be reunited with their former Premier League peers. The serious Championship business begins next Sunday at Burnley. Whether Sullivan travels north for that remains to be seen. It cannot be ruled out. Continue reading...
