The Guardian FootballHossam Hassan and the blurring of lines between football and politics in Egypt
Egypt face Australia in a historic World Cup game on Friday and the manager has been keen to highlight president Al-Sisi’s role in the achievement After Egypt’s 3-1 victory over New Zealand at the World Cup, the national team coach, Hossam Hassan, issued a statement of gratitude to the country’s president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Al-Sisi had sent a congratulatory message to the team and, for Hassan, that almost seemed like a bigger event than the result. The president’s message, he said, was “a medal on his chest,” adding that it has the “effect of magic” before praising the “unprecedented development” of Egyptian sport under al-Sisi’s leadership. The Guardian FootballManzambi dazzles as Switzerland stroll into last 16 with win over Algeria
No wonder Newcastle United are working overtime to wrap up a deal for Johan Manzambi. The secret, if there was such a thing, is well and truly out when it comes to the 20-year-old Freiburg forward who destroyed the Algeria defence to tee up Breel Embolo for Switzerland’s opener in an ominously comfortable victory to reach the last 16. Granit Xhaka, as any good captain would, has tried to keep a lid on soaring expectations, but doing so just got that bit tougher after Switzerland recorded a win in a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1938. This, then, is new territory for this iteration, though the Swiss president, Guy Parmelin, proclaimed they have been in rude health for a while. Up in the VIP seats alongside Gianni Infantino, he presumably ignored dress codes by wearing a bold red cap reminiscent of the one Donald Trump, invisible so far at this tournament, has regularly donned. Rather than the loud Make America Great Again motto, Parmelin’s hat was decorated with the words: “Switzerland great since 1291”. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballMelting hot! When Ireland played Mexico in 43C heat at 1994 World Cup
As the mercury rises amid a heatwave at this year’s World Cup, we asked former Republic of Ireland players Jason McAteer and John Aldridge about the infamous match in Orlando “Some of the boys were melting,” says Jason McAteer as he recalls one of the most notorious matches in World Cup history. “Especially Steve Staunton and Tommy Coyne, they really struggled in the heat.” It was the group stage of the 1994 World Cup and the Republic of Ireland, having just defeated eventual finalists Italy in their opening match, were facing Mexico at the Citrus Bowl in Florida. The Guardian FootballSwitzerland v Algeria: World Cup 2026 last 32 – live
⚽️ Kick-off time: 8pm local/1pm AEST/4am BST/11pm EDT ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Mail Martin Portugal are through to the last 16 after coming from behind to defeat Croatia in an all-time classic at Toronto Stadium. Paul MacInnes had the pleasure of witnessing the chaos and high drama first-hand … Rafael Leão dropped to his knees. His cross had just been flicked into the net by Gonçalo Ramos to take Portugal to the last 16 of the World Cup. Leão’s expression was not one of delight, but relief. Billed as the last dance for two footballing icons, it was Luka Modrić who, at the age of 40, had to leave what will surely be his final World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, plays on, and both scored and was even substituted in a match of endless incident. But this was a contest about more than two individuals, who were far from the most influential players on show. Instead this was an old-fashioned World Cup battle between hardened teams, with momentum swinging first one way then the other then back again. Neither side was willing to give up on their dream, and Portugal were the lucky ones in the end. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballRamos sends Portugal into last 16 as VAR drama caps wild finish against Croatia

Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, plays on, and scored and was even substituted in a match of endless action. But this was a contest about more than two individuals, who were far from the most influential players on show, even if Ronaldo was bewilderingly named player of the match. Instead this was an old-fashioned World Cup battle between hardened teams, with momentum swinging first one way then the other then back again. It was also a match stuffed with incident, including – for the first time in World Cup history – four disallowed goals, one of them denying Croatia an equaliser in the very last second of the match.
