This from Sid Lowe’s preview of today’s game : When Uruguay were beaten 5-1 by the USA in November, he described himself as “toxic”, admitting: “Those who have a relationship with me come out of it worse. There are toxic people who only see errors, who demand, who correct, who are never satisfied with anything, who only like to talk about work, who go to eat and take a newspaper with them because they don’t want to integrate with the rest. But do you know what that behaviour is based on? Fear. One doesn’t enjoy winning; he fears losing much more.” Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballThomas Tuchel searches for solutions to overcome Panama’s low block
England head coach has selection dilemmas, not helped by fitness issues with Declan Rice and Reece James In an ideal world, the only selection conundrum before England face Panama would be whether to rest Harry Kane or let the striker use a dead rubber against Group L’s fourth seeds as a chance to keep up with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and the other Golden Boot contenders . Yet any hope Tuchel had of giving the reserves a run out in New Jersey surely disappeared when his side drew 0-0 with Ghana on Tuesday and failed to win the group with a game to spare. Now complications remain. The schedule is brutal for England, who face a potential run of four games in 13 days, and Tuchel has a dilemma. This, after all, was surely the one that Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney had marked down as a rare day off for Kane. But England still have to clinch top spot, so weighing up whether to get Kane to ease off before the last 32 is not as big a concern for Tuchel as working out how much of a risk to take with his rotation. The Guardian FootballEngland enjoy New York minute but fans check out to watch darts instead
Travelling England fans are going under the radar in the Big Apple, but many have attended the US Darts Masters Times Square has been the setting for viral fan activity during this World Cup, from the Norwegian mass elliptical rowing session to Germans jumping up and down while wearing culturally insensitive headgear. On Friday, the day before the Three Lions face Panama in their decisive Group L fixture, it was surely England’s turn to seize centre stage. As various news crews waited at the junction of Broadway and 42nd Street to capture the moment, however, the only visible presence was two blokes holding up a flag of St George with “Seaham Harbour” written on it. “We don’t usually do dances or anything like that,” explained Joe, one of the flag bearers, who hails from Florida via Sunderland and says he works for Nasa in crowd control. “We just like to do arm curls, as we call it, and have a good time.” He mimes the specific curl, it is the kind that moves a glass from bar to mouth. The Guardian FootballDembélé hat-trick fires France past Norway to seal top spot in World Cup group
Does anyone at the World Cup have the defensive strength to deny this hyper-mobile, supremely varied French attack? Not, it turns out, a second-string Norway, who were torn apart in the first half in Boston, as Ousmane Dembélé scored a beautifully precise 25-minute hat-trick en route to a 4-1 win. France now top Group I and will play their last-32 tie in New Jersey on Tuesday. Norway will play Côte d’Ivoire in Texas. This was a fun, freewheeling game, with the feel of a tournament formality, big third-place playoff energy. But it wasn’t quite that. Certainly nothing that happened here in the absence of the rested Erling Haaland will help nourish Norway’s late-stage tournament hopes, which are real but tentative, and which can only have been damaged by the sight of France’s attack using the corners of Egil Selvik’s goal for shooting practice in a jarringly open, defensively chaotic first half.
