The Guardian FootballBosnia and Herzegovina book place in knockout stage after seeing off Qatar
Bosnia and Herzegovina always knew boosting their goals-scored column would enhance their chances of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. It was no wonder, then, that thousands of their supporters went berserk when Ermin Mahmic added a potentially crucial third goal in a victory that eliminated Qatar. The goal of the game undoubtedly belonged to the exciting 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, but Mahmic’s sealed the win, third in Group B and a probable last-32 date with the USA in Santa Clara, at the home of the San Francisco 49ers. There were jubilant scenes at the final whistle. Sead Kolasinac, one of only two players from their last World Cup appearance in 2014, clenched his fists as the other, Edin Dzeko, after his 150th cap, embraced staff, bear hugs the order of the day. Mahmic, a 21-year-old who until May was still an Austrian youth international, was in tears. It was the same in the stands, where one supporter held aloft his blue-and-yellow scarf, lips quivering, before a victory lap ensued. There was a squad photo and then both fans and players bounced in unison. The sound over the speakers? The Bosnian rock band Dubioza Kolektiv’s track USA, of course. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballHow a ‘naive’ Mauricio Pochettino’s lowest moments turned the USMNT into World Cup darlings
The former Tottenham coach experienced three body blows early in his tenure with the US, each contributing to the solid World Cup to come Tears welled in Mauricio Pochettino’s eyes. His US team had just lost the 2025 Gold Cup final in a hard-fought match to determine the regional crown. To make matters worse they had been beaten by Mexico, their arch-rivals. Were they tears of sadness, of frustration at the result? Perhaps in part. But as Pochettino explained this week, these were also tears of empathy for his players. They had just played a tournament final. In Houston, one of the largest metro areas in the United States. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballWorld Cup becomes cult of the individual but ignores team complexity | Jonathan Liew
The irony of the superstar-heavy narrative is the way it embellishes rather than diminishes importance of the collective “Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-equalling sixth World Cup got off to a disappointing start,” began the Reuters match report of Portugal’s 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo last week. And yes, OK: everyone knows how this game works and why everyone plays it. On one hand, perhaps the greatest sporting day in the history of the world’s 15th most populous country. On the other, 41-year-old man does not score. It’s no contest, really. Get those sweet keywords front and left. Harvest that delicious search traffic. Perhaps you even noticed how I just did exactly the same thing. And yet something does feel qualitatively different this summer: a tectonic shift driven partly by events on the pitch and partly at the behest of the industry itself. This is a World Cup swimming in star names, and never have those star names been so unapologetically, unquestioningly invoked. France do not beat Iraq ; instead Kylian Mbappé throws down the gauntlet to Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and the rest. According to Google, Miroslav Klose’s goals record has been searched more at this tournament than in the year he set it. At times the group phase has felt like an inconvenient distraction from the real business of the Golden Boot race. ( Can Lionel Messi lift the one trophy he hasn’t won yet? ) Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballGoalkeepers beware: Trionda World Cup ball hits ‘crisis’ point at certain speed
Some, like Luca Zidane, have been bamboozled and an academic paper bears out Joe Hart’s opinion about its movement Poor old Luca Zidane. The Algeria goalkeeper has had a turbulent time. In two matches he has conceded five goals, and a pair of them – first from Lionel Messi, then, more embarrassing, from Jordan’s Nizar al-Rashdan – have gone through his fingers. No doubt he has received messages of support from his father – at least he hasn’t butted anybody – but it is hardly the ideal performance on the world’s biggest stage. But Zidane is not alone. Senegal’s Édouard Mendy and Iraq’s Ahmed Basil have got their hands to shots, but been unable to stop them. Is something going on? Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballFidalgo caps Mexico rout as co-hosts maintain 100% record and send Czechia out
There are ways of leaving a tournament. You can go out with a sheen of glory, having gone toe-to-toe with a great opponent. You can be unlucky and go home raging at referees and the fates. You can self‑immolate in a blaze of red cards or own goals or spectacular errors. Or you can slink away without leaving a trace – and that was the path followed by Czechia. Nobody in 20 years will remember they were involved in this World Cup, other perhaps than Ireland fans reflecting on what a mess Czechia made of the place they pinched from them in the playoffs. Maseko fired into the bottom corner in the 63rd minute to put South Africa – who will face the co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday – on four points behind the Group A winners, Mexico, who beat Czechia 3-0 . South Korea – who started with their talisman, Son Heung-min, on the bench – have three points. Continue reading...
