‘We are not in the right physical condition’ Spurs beaten 3-0 at Brentford in Premier League opener Roberto De Zerbi said that Tottenham are “not a team” after they opened their season with a humiliating 3-0 defeat away to Brentford. Spurs are looking to kick on after almost going down last season and are expected to spend more than £300m this summer but they were handed a rude awakening at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brentford outclassed the north Londoners and left De Zerbi rueing a lack of fight from his players, bemoaning his side’s physical conditioning and suggesting that the pre-season tour of Australia was less than ideal. The Guardian FootballMeet the new Spurs, same as the old Spurs despite big summer spending | Billy Munday
Canny Brentford show it will take more than a few new players to restore any sense of stability to Tottenham This was supposed to be New Spurs . Daniel Levy, such a magnet for fan antipathy, has been sidelined. Roberto De Zerbi’s recruitment drive has won the transfer market. The stadium is still nice. But Spurs and ambition were always an awkward combination and all those cash-fuelled dreams were shattered within an hour of the new season. A few headed for the exits after Brentford’s third goal on 49 minutes. There were not many left by the time those in freakish purple made their way over to that corner of the Gtech at full time. There was no escaping the irony that the best player on the splendid opening-day pitch was the only new face in Brentford’s starting XI. Mamadou Sangaré, signed for a club-record fee from Lens , made sure his Premier League debut was played at his pace – faster and more dynamic than any of Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall or Conor Gallagher could deal with in midfield. The Mali international ran off Bergvall to set up Keane Lewis-Potter’s first and struck the shot that led to Michael Kayode’s third. Continue reading...

Taty Castellanos then missed a stoppage-time penalty for West Ham that would have salvaged a point. Continue reading...
The Guardian Premier LeagueBrentford 3-0 Tottenham: Premier League – as it happened
New-look Spurs were outclassed by Brentford, for whom Mamadou Sangaré had a debut to remember The teams are out! Brentford wear their red and white stripes, while Spurs are in their blue, pink, purple and many more colours away kit. According to the marketing blurb, which presumably took upwards of 30 seconds to write, these are “never-before-seen visuals inspired by never-before-seen destinations”. They haven’t even tried to make anything up. No spurious allusions to local industry, significant figures, bus routes? Proper feet-on-the-desk vibes there. Anyway, we’ll be off in a minute. Roberto De Zerbi speaks to Sky. “We have big confidence because all three [debut defenders] are very important players with experience and qualities … we have no problem with them … [Archie Gray, stand-in captain for the day] is very young but has a big personality … he deserves to be captain today … we do not have the complete squad today … but no excuses … the quality is enough to complete … [Brentford] have a clear style … very strong … we have to adapt … the Premier League is a very tough competition and we have to play in our way.” Continue reading...
