The Guardian FootballLate drama sends Austria and Algeria into World Cup knockouts to break Iran hearts
Before a ball was kicked, this match already had nicknames. Some deemed it a telltale biscotto – an Italian classic implying something that has to be baked twice; one cooperating with the other. Or maybe you preferred the “Disgrace of Kansas City”, a new spin on the “Disgrace of Gijón”, the 1982 World Cup match in which West Germany settled for a 1-0 win over Austria in a result that qualified both teams for the knockout round while eliminating Algeria. But what unfolded here was something else altogether. A new classic of the genre. Call it the “Missouri Compromise” if you must, but even that somehow underplays the drama and wild swings of momentum that exhausted the players and coaches who took part, delighting the fans who were lucky enough to witness it. On a steamy night in the American midwest, Algeria and Austria battled gamely, showing heart and desire for most if not all 90-plus minutes en route to a back-and-forth 3-3 draw that qualified both teams for the knockout round. The Guardian FootballColombia take top spot over Portugal after draw in battle of World Cup heavyweights
While wonderful and typical theatre, it was plainly ridiculous. “I’m back!” roared Cristiano Ronaldo, as if playing a key part in Portugal’s dismissal of Uzbekistan was in any way significant. Ronaldo toiled against DR Congo and was comfortably kept quiet here by Colombia. The stars have turned up at this World Cup. Ronaldo, though, still has a way to go if seeking to prove his omnipresence at this tournament will not hinder Portuguese hopes of glory. Nobody other than Father Time has chased down Ronaldo. An alternative quote, from Trainspotting, feels more apposite than what the 41-year-old bawled into a camera as Uzbekistan were swatted aside. “Well, at one time, you’ve got it, then you lose it, and it’s gone for ever,” observed Sick Boy in an Edinburgh park. Add Ronaldo to a list that, as per the film scene, includes David Bowie, Lou Reed, Charlie Nicholas and Malcolm McLaren. Eclectic company. Ronaldo actually wants to be in the same discussion as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. He once was. Now? It is a tricky point to enforce. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballFootball Daily | Filth, fury and fairytales: Uruguay and Cape Verde bring football heritage
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! The Geopolitics World Cup has its North Korea 1966, its Cameroon 1990, rank outsiders to revive hearts hardened by relentless cynicism. For Pak Doo-ik and Roger Milla, read Vozinha, and all his Cape Verde teammates, including Pico Lopes, a defender recruited while playing for Shamrock Rovers from the diaspora via LinkedChat . An archipelago nation with a population smaller than Bradford has negotiated a tough group including two former winners in Spain and Uruguay. They will next meet Argentina in Miami, the adopted city of Lionel Messi, where the fairytale likely ends. Though if not, then they would become the greatest World Cup story of all. “We are small but we have big hearts,” sobbed Vozinha following a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia and a quick check on the other Group H result from Guadalajara. Having sat through the first group games and fumed at the obvious lack of jeopardy, I decided my GWC experience would be significantly enhanced if I ignored some games and played walking football for the 60-plus generation instead. To my amazement, there is an entire new football language waiting to be discovered by anybody prepared to play the beautiful game at a sedate pace. For example, the walking football term used when a player scores three goals is ‘a gerihat-trick’. Come to think of it, this all isn’t far removed from descriptions of England’s performance against Ghana. Does anybody else have any walking football terms?” – Mike Towers. Re: tournament wording in different languages (Football Daily letters passim). I’d love to be the first of 1,057 Scots to tell you what ‘knockout stage’, ‘quarter-final’, ‘semi-final’, ‘final’ and the like are in our national tongue, but I don’t think any of us knows” – Peter Storch (and no other Scots). Leaving aside the £116m for Elliot Anderson (yesterday’s Beyond The GWC, full email edition), I’m concerned about a midfielder called Odysseas Vlachodimos being mentioned in passing . Is he the kind of player who gets lost in the middle of games, or does he tease the opposition till they lose control?” – Kev The Poet. This is an extract from our daily football email … Football Daily. To get the full version, just visit this page and follow the instructions . Continue reading...

The Guardian Football‘Nothing is impossible’: Cape Verde relishing World Cup date with Argentina
Cape Verde reach last 32 after draw with Saudi Arabia ‘We showed the world you should not fear difficulties’ The Cape Verde head coach, Bubista, said his team have “shown that nothing is impossible” after his side secured a historic meeting with Argentina in the last 32. Cape Verde became the smallest country by population to reach the World Cup’s knockout stages, and the first debutants since 2010 to do so, after drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia in Houston. The result meant they finished second in Group H, a stunning achievement given they were deemed outsiders in a group also including Spain and Uruguay. Continue reading...
