The Guardian Football‘It’s a nice hobby’: Manchester United’s Janina Leitzig on goalkeeping and gardening
The former Leicester player’s focus has moved from runner beans to running drills as the season approaches With some parts of England gearing up for a fifth heatwave of 2026 the new Manchester United goalkeeper Janina Leitzig, a keen gardener, is sympathetic to the precarious health of this reporter’s tomato plants. “You’re not used to so little rain, are you?” she observes. For the time being, after her summer move to Manchester, the former Germany youth international does not have a garden of her own but she reveals that, during her three-and-a-half-year spell at her former club Leicester, homegrown vegetables were her pride and joy. “I love to do some gardening. Back home, everyone has their own vegetables and it’s just better, it tastes better,” she tells the Guardian. “Being away from home and away from family, of course you have your football friends, but still it can be quite lonely sometimes if you come home from training, so it was really nice to have a garden and to spend time outside. It’s not too much effort, it’s just a nice hobby.” This is an extract from our free email about women’s football, Moving the Goalposts. The Guardian FootballSaudi Pro League tries to move on from era of ageing megastar but big names still loom | John Duerden
As Ronaldo heads towards 1,000 career goals, the league plans to lift the standard of Saudi Arabian football, not just the clubs There is no Mohamed Salah in the new Saudi Pro League season that kicks off on Thursday and while the era of the ageing megastar is ending, there is still the strong chance the next few months will be dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old is 24 shy of 1,000 career goals and, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner having scored 102 in 107 league games for Al-Nassr, the milestone could – should – be reached this season. Huge as that will be, just how it fits into the plans of the league is unclear. This is the fourth season since the spending started with $957m splashed out in the summer of 2023. It produced thousands of articles, dozens of international broadcasting deals and untold numbers of people worldwide sporting the yellow CR7 Al-Nassr shirt. Now, though, the focus is on getting a little more value for money and lifting not just the clubs, but the standard of Saudi Arabian football in general. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballFootball transfer rumours: Folarin Balogun to Tottenham? Gabriel Jesus to Napoli?
Today’s fluff is coming back with a better offer Bradley Barcola is firmly in Liverpool’s sights as they look to rebuild their attack in the post-Mohamed Salah era. The two-time Champions League winner reportedly wants to leave Paris Saint-Germain, and Anfield is his preferred destination, though Arsenal have apparently been making eyes at the France international too. For their part PSG are thought to be closing on deals for Barcelona’s World Cup winner Ferran Torres and the Ajax winger Mika Godts , though the 21-year-old Belgium international had talked at the weekend of “putting an end” to rumours that he was refusing to play for Ajax in order to force a move. England’s World Cup cult hero Djed Spence could soon be exhibiting his marauding runs and eye-catching slide tackles in Serie A. Inter are interested in a £25.6m move for the Tottenham full-back, who fancies a move to San Siro and might find himself struggling for regular first-team football in north London after Roberto De Zerbi’s busy summer in the market. The Guardian FootballLeague One 2026-27 preview: the contenders, hopefuls and strugglers
Russell Martin’s new-look Leicester look set to challenge for promotion, while it could be a tough campaign for Notts County and AFC Wimbledon How did it come to this, that a club crowned Premier League champions a decade ago are down in the third tier? Chronic mismanagement across the board has been Leicester ’s problem for too long and they need to reset under Russell Martin. Many of the top earners have been shipped out and not much brought in, but there remains enough quality to challenge at this level. Martin has at his disposal plenty of young talents who could finally be given their chance thanks to circumstance and who will be ably supported by Harry Souttar and Stephy Mavididi.
