Bellingham’s extra-time winner sinks Norway and sends England into World Cup semi-finals

Thomas Tuchel’s message was that it was time for England to thrive at the business end of the World Cup; the most exciting part. His players had to release the handbrake and go for it. They must not have any regrets against a Norway team that most of England expected them to beat. English arrogance? Or cold, hard realism? Happily for Tuchel, he had a player in Jude Bellingham who took him at his word. Every one of them. Bellingham had shone previously at this tournament but he moved to another level here when it mattered the most. Continue reading...

‘A brilliant reprieve, a unifying force’: America falls in love with World Cup

Packed stadiums, record TV viewers, and an outlet for joyous multiculturalism under attack by Trump – the tournament has taken the US by storm There were plenty of reasons to believe the US hosting the World Cup would be a disaster. In the year and a half leading up to the kick-off, Donald Trump had threatened to annex tournament co-host Canada, and to invade the other co-host, Mexico; he was at war with one of the tournament’s participants, Iran. Harsh travel restrictions were preventing fans from Senegal, Ivory Coast and Haiti from getting visas. Ticket prices were outrageous. Hotels weren’t filling up as promised. Fifa was introducing “hydration breaks” during games, allowing TV commercials in what appeared to be a shameless cash grab that threatened the flow of play. Continue reading...

‘What’s the point of working if you can’t do stuff like this?’ England fans descend on Miami

England and Norway fans have flocked to Miami in their tens of thousands to enjoy the football and sunshine It is not just another morning on Ocean Drive, where brashness mingles with brilliance and grandeur sits unashamedly alongside the grotesque. A Huddersfield Town flag is being hung from one of the art deco hotels that make this area of Miami Beach a living, decadent museum. Two Norwegians in national team shirts cycle past, the woman adjusting a viking helmet before pedalling to catch up. To locals playing volleyball beneath the sand dunes as usual, the sideshow is at once inescapable and remote. Not even Miami will have seen a party of this nature. Around 30,000 England fans are due to converge here by Saturday but they will be given a run for their money by those baying for Norway, who have offered some of this World Cup’s enduring spectacles. A quarter-final rewards those who have been on the road for a month and is irresistible to the spontaneous too. Continue reading...
