The next men’s World Cup is still four years away, but we take a look at the teams with the firmest foundations who should be primed to contend The 2026 World Cup provided many an esteemed veteran with what could be their international swansongs, with golden greats Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Neymar, James Rodríguez and Guillermo Ochoa all making teary exits as their tournament ended. As we turn ahead to the 2030 World Cup, any player 32 or older will be sweating their selection status and changing their daily routines to stay sharp against inevitable aging. For these power rankings, we’re overvaluing sure things. Our picture editor chooses his favourite images from the tournament including Lionel Messi’s cathedral, that delicious diving header from Jude Bellingham and a humbling scene in Gaza What makes a great World Cup photograph? Now there’s a question with myriad answers. Composition, newsworthiness, emotional resonance, expert timing and luck can all contribute to varying degrees. But one thing they all share is the power to capture attention. On the Guardian sport picture desk, we have received more than 500,000 World Cup photographs over the past six weeks, with so many gems among them. Here, with much applause to the photographers who created them and a slight bias towards England, are my favourite images of the tournament. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballEnzo Fernández shows real quality for Argentina but Chelsea future is up in the air
Brash midfielder has admirers in Madrid, though his World Cup displays illustrate what he can offer Xabi Alonso’s Blues Enzo Fernández was an unstoppable mix of style and spite during Argentina’s win over England . The midfielder’s first contribution during Wednesday’s semi-final in Atlanta was to plough into Elliot Anderson and clobber Manchester City’s new £116m signing round the head. He escaped without a booking, though, and made the most of some generous refereeing by showing the other side to his game when Argentina took control after going 1-0 down early in the second half. Much has already been said about England’s attempt to hold on to their lead. A particular frustration for fans who watch the Premier League every week was that not enough was done to disrupt Fernández. The Chelsea midfielder is a wonderful player in possession but can struggle when opponents run past him. That weakness has caused structural issues for Chelsea and will be a factor if they decide to sell the Argentinian this summer. Against England, though, Fernández was given space to do as he pleased during the second half. He pulled the strings next to Alexis Mac Allister and proved his big-game mentality by scoring the equaliser with a bending shot from 25 yards in the 85th minute. Continue reading...

Everything seemed to be going right for England in a tournament -- precisely up until the moment it didn't.
The Guardian FootballThe bigger picture: Tuchel gets blame for England exit but this is not only about him | Barney Ronay
German will be pilloried for his semi-final decisions but that is to ignore the fact English football culture is not set up to win major tournaments “I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly.” As England’s World Cup hopes recede into another spell of heartache , let down in Atlanta by the latest handsome, cadaverous Mr Right, a little sadder, not much wiser, sunburnt, broke, eating Jägerbomb ice cream out of the tub with a spoon, this is a good moment to seek some classic New York romcom solace. Meg Ryan was right. Don’t be sad that it’s over. Be incredibly angry and frustrated on the radio that it happened at all. Continue reading...
