The Guardian FootballFifa unites the world – in anger at hydration breaks (AKA ad breaks) | Barney Ronay
Fans, players and coaches have voiced their indignation at the way the game is massively altered by the four-quarter structure With 22 minutes gone on Tuesday night at Boston Stadium, and an injury delay in train, a clutch of England and Ghana players wandered to the side of the pitch and began taking drinks. This was the signal for a sudden spurt of refereeing indignation, the officials sprinting across in a state of apparently genuine outrage, appalled by the spectacle of unofficial hydration. The first drinks break, Hydro-Quart-One, was only a minute away. Here we had players basically stealing hydration. Not to mention messing with the most vital part of the show – the advert timings. Guys, the director has not cued the break. David Beckham has the ice-cold faux beer halfway to his lips. Will Ferrell is making hyena-like vocal warm-up noises at the wheel of his crisp-delivery lorry. We’re professionals. Hit your marks people. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballSocceroos secure place in World Cup last 32 after nerve-shredding draw with Paraguay
It was not a match of high distinction, but all the Socceroos needed was a pass against Paraguay, and their 0-0 draw in San Francisco Bay Area stadium booked a place in the World Cup knockout phase for the third time in their history. A much-changed Australia side controlled large parts of the match, but with both teams knowing that a draw would be enough to qualify for the last 32, there were long stretches without impetus. The Guardian FootballParaguay v Australia: World Cup 2026 – live
⚽️ Kick-off time: 7pm local/12pm AEST/3am BST/10pm EDT ⚽️ Third-place table | Player guide | Tables | Mail Jonathan ⚽️ Follow live coverage of Turkey v USA as it happens Jonathan Liew considers the impact of this World Cup being the most individual > collective in tournament history. … something does feel qualitatively different this summer: a tectonic shift driven partly by events on the pitch and partly at the behest of the industry itself. This is a World Cup swimming in star names, and never have those star names been so unapologetically, unquestioningly invoked. France do not beat Iraq ; instead Kylian Mbappé throws down the gauntlet to Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and the rest. According to Google, Miroslav Klose’s goals record has been searched more at this tournament than in the year he set it. At times the group phase has felt like an inconvenient distraction from the real business of the Golden Boot race. ( Can Lionel Messi lift the one trophy he hasn’t won yet? ) Continue reading...
BBC SportJapan and Sweden draw takes both into last 32
Daizen Maeda's smart finish to Japan's team goal is cancelled out by Anthony Elanga's long-range strike as Sweden fight back in a 1-1 draw that takes both sides through to the World Cup knockout stages.
The Guardian FootballJapan and Sweden both reach World Cup last 32 after Elanga’s strike seals draw
Thank goodness this is Dallas and not Gijón . There was ultimately no disgrace in a draw that served everyone, even if one might have forgiven Graham Potter and Hajime Moriyasu for shaking hands at half-time. At that point most onlookers may have fancied calling it all off too but a much sparkier second half served up two moments to cherish and left Sweden, who had risked throwing such a promising campaign away, certain of a spot in the last 32. Japan were already confident of theirs and, as runners-up, will face Brazil in Houston on Monday. It is a mouthwatering knockout clash that surely has no business being contested so early in the competition. In fairness a lower finish might have served them no better and they can be spurred by the precedent set by recent history. Back in October, after all, they thrillingly beat Carlo Ancelotti’s side in Tokyo. They will feel able to do it again and there was no point risking the third-place lottery here. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballNetherlands power to win over Tunisia and set up last-32 meeting with Morocco
The Oranje bus had better get a move on. A comfortable victory over Tunisia after being sent on their way by a record-equalling 12th own goal of the tournament and further strikes from Brian Brobbey and Jan Paul van Hecke sealed top spot in Group F for the Netherlands ahead of Japan. Their prize is avoiding a meeting with Brazil in the last 32, with Ronald Koeman’s side now set for a mouthwatering showdown with Morocco in Monterrey instead. Having arrived in southern Texas almost a month ago and already taken in games in Dallas, Houston and Kansas City, the specially converted double decker that has become a fixture at recent major tournaments now faces a journey of more than 1,000 miles before Monday’s game in northern Mexico. It is a challenge that Koeman is clearly wary of. Continue reading...
