Cape Verde’s World Cup fairytale continues after Saudi Arabia draw secures Argentina tie

After the full-time whistle Cape Verde’s players formed a huddle around their head coach, Bubista, eyes straining at the tiny moving images on a mobile phone. They sought the certainty that a dream had come true and, when the outcome nearly 1,000 miles away in Guadalajara was confirmed, erupted in unfathomable joy. Dailon Livramento, the centre-forward, leapt on to the back of his teammate “Diney” Borges. Everyone in view grabbed the nearest person to embrace and then came all the flags, the islands represented by their 10 stars made famous during one of the World Cup’s most compelling underdog stories in decades. One of them was waved in the stands by Ana Cândida Évora, the mother of their remarkable goalkeeper, Vozinha. Others made their way on to the pitch and what a sight it was when the entire squad, visibly buzzing to a man, stayed still for long enough to pose for photographs in front of a disbelieving support. They drummed and sang into the night because never has the most formidable of tasks seemed so glorious. Cape Verde, the country of 530,000, will take on Lionel Messi and Argentina in the last 32. Thomas Tuchel searches for solutions to overcome Panama’s low block

England head coach has selection dilemmas, not helped by fitness issues with Declan Rice and Reece James In an ideal world, the only selection conundrum before England face Panama would be whether to rest Harry Kane or let the striker use a dead rubber against Group L’s fourth seeds as a chance to keep up with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and the other Golden Boot contenders . Yet any hope Tuchel had of giving the reserves a run out in New Jersey surely disappeared when his side drew 0-0 with Ghana on Tuesday and failed to win the group with a game to spare. Now complications remain. The schedule is brutal for England, who face a potential run of four games in 13 days, and Tuchel has a dilemma. This, after all, was surely the one that Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney had marked down as a rare day off for Kane. But England still have to clinch top spot, so weighing up whether to get Kane to ease off before the last 32 is not as big a concern for Tuchel as working out how much of a risk to take with his rotation. Urgency, magic and Rashford: how England can beat the low block against Panama | Emma Hayes

Thomas Tuchel’s team will be working on key details of how to combat a low block before their final Group L game on Saturday England’s goalless draw with Ghana reminded me of many games in my coaching career, when you’re facing a team who are extremely compact, positioned very low, and very well drilled. To break them down you need to play with more variety, better movement and – above all – urgency, and it took England too long to play with urgency. They can expect the same stubborn defending from Panama on Saturday. Therefore, in the buildup to their final group match, they will have been working on the key details needed to score against a low block. Continue reading...

From cheap transport to football geekery: how Zohran Mamdani won the World Cup

The New York City mayor has made his mark on the tournament to cap an extraordinary run of sporting success over the last few months A stunning evening sun was setting behind Union City on Wednesday. It made it slightly harder to see the giant screen that had been set up for the Brazil v Scotland watch party in Hudson River Park, but not enough to ruin the vibe of a New York City World Cup evening. Partly it didn’t matter because the clutch of Brazilians watching the game, kitted out in canary yellow and “100% Jesus” headbands, were already in full samba mode, given how comfortable their 3-0 win was . But mainly it was because this was a beautiful World Cup moment. This is my eighth World Cup. The outdoor screening, combined with the gentle breeze off the Hudson – I had already navigated the hubbub in Times Square, colonised by chanting Germans and flag-waving Ecuadorians – was as captivating as anything I’ve experienced in Marseille, Seoul, Cape Town or Rio de Janeiro. New York City is perhaps the only place in the world where a World Cup may go unnoticed but the tournament genuinely feels like an intrinsic part of life in large parts of the city, certainly since the Knicks’ victory parade finished. In fact, the feelgood endorphins seem to have segued seamlessly into World Cup fever for many in the city. Continue reading...

Fifa unites the world – in anger at hydration breaks (AKA ad breaks) | Barney Ronay

Fans, players and coaches have voiced their indignation at the way the game is massively altered by the four-quarter structure With 22 minutes gone on Tuesday night at Boston Stadium, and an injury delay in train, a clutch of England and Ghana players wandered to the side of the pitch and began taking drinks. This was the signal for a sudden spurt of refereeing indignation, the officials sprinting across in a state of apparently genuine outrage, appalled by the spectacle of unofficial hydration. The first drinks break, Hydro-Quart-One, was only a minute away. Here we had players basically stealing hydration. Not to mention messing with the most vital part of the show – the advert timings. Guys, the director has not cued the break. David Beckham has the ice-cold faux beer halfway to his lips. Will Ferrell is making hyena-like vocal warm-up noises at the wheel of his crisp-delivery lorry. We’re professionals. Hit your marks people. Continue reading...

Goalkeepers beware: Trionda World Cup ball hits ‘crisis’ point at certain speed

Some, like Luca Zidane, have been bamboozled and an academic paper bears out Joe Hart’s opinion about its movement Poor old Luca Zidane. The Algeria goalkeeper has had a turbulent time. In two matches he has conceded five goals, and a pair of them – first from Lionel Messi, then, more embarrassing, from Jordan’s Nizar al-Rashdan – have gone through his fingers. No doubt he has received messages of support from his father – at least he hasn’t butted anybody – but it is hardly the ideal performance on the world’s biggest stage. But Zidane is not alone. Senegal’s Édouard Mendy and Iraq’s Ahmed Basil have got their hands to shots, but been unable to stop them. Is something going on? Continue reading...

World Cup becomes cult of the individual but ignores team complexity | Jonathan Liew

The irony of the superstar-heavy narrative is the way it embellishes rather than diminishes importance of the collective “Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-equalling sixth World Cup got off to a disappointing start,” began the Reuters match report of Portugal’s 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo last week. And yes, OK: everyone knows how this game works and why everyone plays it. On one hand, perhaps the greatest sporting day in the history of the world’s 15th most populous country. On the other, 41-year-old man does not score. It’s no contest, really. Get those sweet keywords front and left. Harvest that delicious search traffic. Perhaps you even noticed how I just did exactly the same thing. Fidalgo caps Mexico rout as co-hosts maintain 100% record and send Czechia out

There are ways of leaving a tournament. You can go out with a sheen of glory, having gone toe-to-toe with a great opponent. You can be unlucky and go home raging at referees and the fates. You can self‑immolate in a blaze of red cards or own goals or spectacular errors. Or you can slink away without leaving a trace – and that was the path followed by Czechia. Nobody in 20 years will remember they were involved in this World Cup, other perhaps than Ireland fans reflecting on what a mess Czechia made of the place they pinched from them in the playoffs. Continue reading...
